In 2020, Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon released WolfWalkers, a gorgeous animated tale of a young female hunter who meets a Wolfwalker and forms a bond with her. The film was critically acclaimed, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and made many best films of the year lists.
The film released exclusively on Apple TV+, making it nigh impossible for those without the streaming service to watch the film. But it seems fans’ prayers for a physical media release have been answered… kinda.
WolfWalkers will finally get a Blu-Ray release this December, but the catch is that it will exclusively release in a limited edition collectors’ set packaged with Cartoon Saloon’s other films, “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea.” All three films have been dubbed an unofficial trilogy about Irish folklore from the studio. In other words, if you just wanted WolfWalkers, this is the only game in town. You will get more bang for your buck this way, though, and all three films have been critically acclaimed, so…
The set, available exclusively on GKIDS, will include Blu-Ray copies of all three films, with a bonus disc of extras for all films, a foldable poster, 40-page art book, and exclusive, environmentally friendly packaging. It will also include brand new extras for WolfWalkers, including an audio commentary, a virtual Comic-Con panel, six featurettes, and trailers.
In a time of superstition and magic, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn Goodfellowe, journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwalkers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.
The set is available for preorder here.
