It’s getting close to the end for Supergirl‘s final season, and this week’s episode, “Hope for Tomorrow,” is kicking things into overdrive. As Alex and Kelly bring Esme home, Supergirl faces a global threat, while Nyxly makes things personal.
Welcome Home, Esme | Alex (Chyler Leigh) is in full panic mode as Kelly (Azie Tesfai) brings little Esme home and Kara (Melissa Benoist) and J’onn (David Harewood) are there to comfort her. Once Esme arrives, she accidentally mimics J’onn’s powers and phases through the wall as Alex yanks her out. Meanwhile, Nyxly (Peta Sergeant) tries to steal the totem that she failed to steal last episode and Supergirl arrives, forcing her to scram. When Supergirl tries to access the totem, it tells her to inspire a lasting hope, leaving her stumped.
Leverage | Alex enlists Supergirl to help Esme work through her mimic powers, during which Esme immediately figures out Supergirl’s secret identity. When Esme uses her super hearing, she gets overwhelmed with all the noise and storms off. Nyxly decides that she’ll let Supergirl access the totem’s energy first and kidnap William (Staz Nair) to convince her to hand the totem over. J’onn sticks around at the location where the totem is after the energy causes the Kaznia and Corto Maltese ambassadors to mistrust each other, derailing the peace talks.
Esme tells Kelly that she doesn’t want to live with her and Alex anymore and the two of them vow to convince her that they won’t abandon her like her other foster families. Nyxly arrives at CatCo and kidnaps William, ordering Supergirl to bring her the totems, or she’ll kill him.
The Quest for Peace | Alex and Kelly use a Truth Seeker to convince Esme that they will never abandon her, while Supergirl figures out a way to get the totem: Remove all nuclear missiles from the Earth. Of course! But she’ll have to do it fast, because Corto Maltese fires a nuke at Kaznia. Supergirl and J’onn grab all the nukes and Brainy (Jesse Rath) flies them into the sun. This is enough for Supergirl to grab the totem and she manages to get Nyxly’s totem and William back before Nyxly scrams.
With three totes in their possession, Team Supergirl decides to destroy one of the totems to prevent Nyxly from assembling them, but doing so could take away the attribute that totem brings into the world. They decide that the hope totem can be spared and Supergirl throws it into the sun, which Nyxly sees just before a portal delivers her a watch with note from a “Secret admirer.”
Supergirl airs Tuesdays on The CW.
