“Van Helsing” Recap: Creating Dracula

SYFY’s Van Helsing was back Friday night for another bloody good episode! The season 5 premiere left off with Jack waiting for her execution in the past for killing Dracula to prevent her from becoming the Dark One, and this week picks right up with her execution. ‘Old Friends’ was written by Jackie May and directed by Jonathan Scarfe.

Dead But Not Gone | Jack’s (Nicole Muñoz) execution is moving forward as planned, and she’s dragged out into a square full of people throwing rotten food at her. Bathory (Jesse Stanley) is in attendance, and seems very curious about Jack.

Jack gets hung, but we all know she’ll heal up in no time and get right back in on the action.

Michaela (Heather Doerksen) wants to inspect Jack’s mark, so she sends two members of the Sisterhood out to retrieve her body. She also gives them very specific instructions to cut off her head.

They dig up Jack’s body, but she suddenly pops up and is ready to fight. She recognizes one of the Sisterhood as Alexandra (Sarah Arató), Florian’s (Matús Kvietik) sister, and bites her. Alexandra turns human, and Jack’s life is saved from the other vampire by Bathory. Jack recognizes Bathory from the present, but this Bathory is different. She’s a vampire hunter, and wants to team up with Jack.

Alexandra goes back home to find her brother, who is hiding in a pub from vampires. He’s shocked when he sees his sister, she tells him Jack saved her. They keep hiding here until Jack later finds them.

Bathory takes Jack back to where her people are camping and gives her some insight into her upbringing. She is from a long line of vampire hunters, and her mother died doing her job. Jack notices that Bathory’s companion Roberto has a vial of blood around his neck and immediately knows what it is. He tells her to ask Bathory about it.

Blood Bath | Michaela isn’t going to let Olivia (Tricia Helfer) not become the Dark One, so she uses the blood of Olivia’s servant’s to bring her back from the dead. Olivia doesn’t realize she’s dead and terrifies her husband Count Dalibor (Kim Coates). He insists no one sees her and locks her away in a room no one will find her in. She eventually begins to remember what happened to her and is mortified by the fact that she’s dead. She hates that she no longer has blood flowing through her veins or a heartbeat.

Trap | Jack and Bathory come up with a plan to try to stop Michaela by setting up a trap for her. But Jack knows she’s going to need Alexandra’s help, so she sneaks into the village to find the girl and her brother.

She finds them and gets Alexandra to help her, she needs to know what Michaela was up to and why. Jack then takes that info back to Bathory where they devise their plan.

Jack uses the mark on her arm to contact Michaela, hoping to scare the vampire. But that only seems to inspire Michaela to play with her mind. When Jack and Bathory set their trap, Jack confronts Michaela and tells Bathory to set it off, but it never happens. It’s just Jack and Michaela, so Jack does what she thinks is best. She bites the vampire, thinking it will turn her human. Instead jack seems to be turning into a vampire as she flees. She winds up at Bathory’s feet, completely healthy and normal. Michalea tricked her, she was never there. She distracted them long enough to finish going through with her evil plans.

The Dark One | Michaela draws upon all her powers and is able to put the Dark One into Olivia van Dracula, creating the monster everyone knows as Dracula.
