“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” Recap: Why Can’t We Be Friends?

This week on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” things get decidedly violent and tease a troubling turn for the final two episodes of the limited series. Here’s what went down in “The Whole World Is Watching.”

Making Friends | Bucky (Sebastian Stan) talks with Ayo (Florence Kasumba), who turns out to be the one who helped Bucky overcome his HYDRA programming back in Wakanda, and she gives him eight hours to get what he needs from Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) before the Dora Milaje comes for him. Bucky rejoins Zemo and Sam (Anthony Mackie) as they investigate the relief shelter where Karli (Erin Kellyman) was staying when her friend Donya died. Zemo bribes a few kids with candy to get the location of Donya’s funeral, while Karli retrieves the vials of stolen super soldier serum.

Crashing the Funeral | Zemo refuses to give Sam and Bucky the location of the funeral so they can keep him alive, but promises to take them there. On their way there, however, John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Lemar Hoskins (Cle Bennett) tag along so they can capture Karli. Sam goes into the funeral alone to try to reason with her, while Bucky, John, Lemar and Zemo wait outside.

After the mourners clear out, Sam and Karli talk and Sam admits that he agrees with Karli’s mission to help the displaced people, even though he doesn’t agree with her killing people to do it. But just when it seems Karli will turn the corner, John storms in to arrest her and Karli thinks that Sam was setting her up and she flees the scene.

Zemo catches up to her as she tries to escape and shoots her, causing her to drop the serum vials, which Zemo subsequently destroys. Except for one, which John finds and pockets without telling anyone. Without the vials that the Power Broker is demanding, Karli is in a precarious position. But so are Bucky and Sam, when the Dora Milaje arrive and demand Zemo. After a fight, Zemo manages to escape in the chaos and Ayo leaves disappointed.

What Would You Do? | Karli calls Sarah (Adepero Oduye) and threatens to kill her unless she delivers a message to Sam to meet her. Sam and Bucky confront Karli and she offers them a choice: Join her cause, or let her go. Before Sam can make the call, John and Lemar storm in and get into a brawl with Karli and her enchanted gang, but John took the vial that he stole and can now go toe to toe with them.

During the fight, Karli hurls Lemar into a pillar, breaking his neck and killing him. Karli is horrified at what she’s done, but escapes, as a furious John follows one of the Flag Smashers and even when the guy surrenders, uses Cap’s shield to pummel him to death in full view of the public, who get it all on video.

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is now streaming on Disney+.
