“Legacies'” latest, “Goodbyes Sure Do Suck,” sure does live up to its title in an emotional hour that sees the goodbye of someone who’s been here since the beginning. When one of their own is put in mortal danger, the Super Squad must do everything they can to cheat death again, but this time, it may not be enough.
Severing the Connection | As Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) reads to Rafael (Peyton Alex Smith) about his family history in King Arthur’s legend, Rafael’s nose begins to bleed. When Alaric (Matthew Davis) finds Chad’s corpse, he confronts the Necromancer (Ben Guerens), who figures out that by agreeing to sever his connection to Rafael, he undoes the magic keeping him alive.
As Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) scramble to find a spell to save him, Rafael seems resigned to his fate and takes Landon on a road trip to enjoy his final hours. Meanwhile, the Necromancer explains his plan to Alyssa (Olivia Liang), which is to raise Malivore again, but Alyssa suggests raising all the dead monsters to torment the Salvatore School.

Looking for a Loophole | Alaric returns to a long forgotten character, Sheriff Mack, to talk her into finding Rafael’s birth mother, Lucia, so she can be with him as he dies. Lucia refuses at first, saying Raf is better off without him, but she eventually comes back. Lizzie and Hope find a spell to transfer the phoenix energy from Landon into Rafael to keep him alive, but it doesn’t work because when Rafael stabbed Landon with the golden arrow last season, he killed the phoenix side of Landon, meaning Landon is now mortal.
Rafael insists on throwing a big party for his final hours and everyone has a good time remembering him. Rafael and Landon are hanging out for the last time, when Raf’s father, Walt, arrives with Lucia and the family reunites.
Some Idea of Heaven | As the sun rises, Rafael seemingly vanishes, leaving Landon confused, but Hope tells him that she and Lizzie used the Ascendant to put Rafael’s spirit into the prison world, but with the spirits of Walt and Lucia as well so Rafael can be with his family for eternity and get the life he never had. Landon visits the world to say one last tear filled goodbye to his brother as Rafael and his family leave for a fishing trip.
As Landon returns to Hope in the real world, he gets angry when she suggests that he stay in the prison world until the Necromancer is dealt with. He accuses her of not caring about him when he’s not immortal and when she won’t admit that, he walks away from her. Meanwhile, the Necromancer and Alyssa resurrect the Sphinx from Malivore to see if he can foresee if their plan will succeed. Not only does he say that their plan will come to pass, he says that one of the Salvatore School students will die! Well, that’s ominous!
