Welcome back Earpers for another Wynonna Earp recap! This week we saw what happened in the Garden with Eve, Wynonna is reunited with her sister and Doc, and things get super steamy between WayHaught. Oh yeah, and we found out that they’ve been in the Garden for 18 months! ‘Friends in Low Places’ was written by the brilliant Emily Andras, and directed by Paolo Barzman. Here’s what happened!
Monument | The episode picks up right where the premiere left off, with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis), and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) in Monument, right after Nicole fell through the grate. Wynonna wants to get to her friend as fast as possible, but they still have zombies to deal with.
Rachel fills Wynonna in on what the scientists were doing before BBD destroyed the place while they fight their way down to the basement. Rachel also admits she’s been staying here for months because she’s hoping her mom isn’t dead, but she’ll kill her if she’s been turned into one of the zombie-things.
Nicole is on the floor of the basement, hurt and screaming for Wynonna to help her. To make matters even worse, there is a zombie slowly crawling towards her. This is the real Nicole, but who is with Waverly in the Garden?
Wynonna and Rachel put on decontamination suits (quarantine fashion) to go into the lab because there is no oxygen in there. They’ll have to quietly move through the lab, find and obtain the key cards, and use the key cards to open the door to the gate room.
Wynonna and Rachel quickly collect the key cards, but Wynonna’s air hose breaks and she’s a little loopy by the time they make it out.
Nicole is on the other side of the door, trying to fight off a zombie when Wynonna and Rachel burst through and save her.
Nicole’s leg is broken in 3 places, which is going to make getting out of this place pretty difficult. She also tells her BFF that she’s going to say yes to Waverly’s proposal. Rachel finds her mother, she’s dead. Rachel realizes she died trying to keep the portal shut, so she doesn’t want them to open it. She points a gun at Wynonna.
Wynonna and Nicole do their best to convince Rachel to let them through the portal to save the person they both love. It eventually works, Rachel’s going to let them through. Her and Wynonna open the portal, but Nicole is too hurt to go through it. After an emotional sendoff, Wynonna jumps through the portal, followed by Bulshar’s ring that Nicole throws after her.
The Garden | In the Garden, Doc (Tim Rozon) faces a very naked Nicole. But she has her season 1 hair and her mannerisms seem to be slightly off. They realize Nicole is trapped when Doc tries to give her his coat to cover up in, so he runs off to get Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) who will surely be pleased to see her Haught cop.
Doc gets Waverly and, after scolding her for feeding the machine her blood, tells her about Nicole. Waves rushes off to see her girlfriend/maybe fiancée.
Waves is so happy to see Nicole, but can’t get through the barrier to hold her. Nicole seems uncharacteristically irritated.
Doc and Waves try to figure out a way to free Nicole while she makes an outfit out of cherry blossoms. The machine starts freaking out again. Nicole tries to convince them not to feed it, but Doc ignores her and rushes off to do so. Waverly begins to hear the throne call out to her, and Nicole tells her she’s already sacrificed enough, she doesn’t need to sit on it.
Before Doc is able to feed the machine a secret door opens up behind him, he goes through it.
Waverly and Nicole have an interesting chat about God, and Waves seems to begin to realize that something is up with Nicole.
Doc finds three stones set up with Nicole’s face on them, but on the back is the face of something evil. Doc knows this is not their Nicole Haught. He suddenly this prison is built for whatever he left Waverly with, and rushes back to warn her.
“Nicole” is set free because Doc didn’t feed the machine. She runs around in celebration, puts on Doc’s coat and runs outside with Waverly. As soon as Waverly kisses her she knows something is wrong, this doesn’t taste like her Nicole. This is where “Nicole” reveals her true identity. Eve.
Eve drags Waves around, and they begin to fight but Doc steps in to help. Eve transforms into Jeremy (Varun Saranga), thinking it would be harder for Doc to hurt him. But using Jeremy’s face just makes Doc even more mad. They fight, and Eve eventually transforms into Wynonna after Doc spears her to stone with shears.
Through the Gate | Wynonna enters the Garden and retrieves the ring before noticing herself (Eve) pinned with shears. The two trade insults and threats, and Eve tells Wynonna that she is death. Suddenly Wynonna hears Doc in the distance and goes after him. Eve pulls out the shears.
Waverly is approaching the stone throne, intent on sitting on it to keep Eve trapped. Waverly sits on the throne, and Eve is pinned in place.
On the other side of the portal, Nicole and Rachel are trapped by the zombies, who will soon bust through the door. Rachel tells Nicole of her ancestor, The Valdez. Nicole admits to Rachel that they might die, but not without a fight. She pulls out beaver blaster just as the zombies break in.
Wynonna finds Doc, but he thinks she’s Eve. He fights her and won’t let up until she says their safe word, Dollywood. He knows this is his Wynonna. After a brief reunion, Doc goes off to take care of Eve while Wynonna goes after her sister.
Wynonna finds Waverly on the throne and tries to convince her to get up, but Waverly tells her that this is her duty, she is the heir, the Guardian. She’s also speaking in a very emotionless, stoic voice, very unlike our Waves.
Eve breaks free and fights Doc as Jeremy again. The fight ends when Doc kicks Eve through a portal. Hopefully it’s not the one to Purgatory. The Garden starts rumbling and Doc runs off to get Wynonna and Waverly and get out of there.
Wynonna pulls out Bulshar’s ring, the ring Waves proposed to Nicole with, and asks her to remember Nicole. Waverly comes around when Wynonna says Nicole is going to say yes to her proposal. Our Waves breaks through and asks her big sister for help. Wynonna puts the ring on her sisters finger then pulls her off the throne and into a tight hug. They’re free, now they just have to get home.
The Earp sisters meet up with Doc and they begin searching for the right doorway leading to the portal. They eventually see the glowing doorway and go through that one, but not before throwing Bulshar’s ring behind.
Purgatory | Wynonna wakes up in the snow in Purgatory where the staircase was, alone. She gets up and starts walking.
Doc also wakes up alone in the snow, at the well. He has Waverly’s bag with the book she picked inside the Garden. He heads to the Homestead.
Waverly wakes up in the snow near the Homestead and immediately runs to find Nicole. Nicole shoots at Waverly before coming out onto the porch and seeing that it’s Waverly. They have a beautiful reunion, which involves a very beautifully done lovemaking montage between the two of them. After, Waverly realizes Nicole’s hair is longer. Nicole tells her that she’s been gone for 18 months 3 weeks and 4 days. They all have.
Doc and Wynonna find each other in town, then realize there’s something very wrong in Purgatory. People are hanging out in the open.
