“Supergirl” Recap: A Day in the Life of a Criminal Mastermind

Melissa Benoist steps behind the camera for “Supergirl’s” latest episode, “Deus Lex Machina,” in which Lex Luthor’s sinister plot is finally revealed in a flashback episode recapping what Lex has been up to since “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”

The Lex Luthor Power Hour | Starting at the end, Supergirl and J’onn arrive to find Lex standing over Margo’s dead body with blood literally on his hands. But it turns out he killed her to free all the captive VR users being held in the warehouse and William has found a video in which Margo claims sole responsibility for the VR glitch. Lex claims that he only killed Margo in self defense and there’s no proof otherwise. But of course, the rest of the episode, a “Supergirl” tradition of a villain flashback, will prove him wrong.

Making Allies | Immediately after “Crisis,” Lex begins his plan to win Lena over, but when she informs him of Leviathan, he changes his tune and works on his plan to take them down. After finding a list of their operatives from Winn’s ship from the future, he tracks down Eve Tessmacher, who, in this new reality, is still Leviathan’s agent, but was forced into service when they murdered her father and threatened her mother to keep her around. Lex promises to keep her and her mother safe if she works as his mole in Leviathan.

Turns out that Lex was responsible for the VR exit glitch that is trapping users in VR and he tasked Eve with making sure it doesn’t get fixed. He also tasks her with moving the comatose VR users and the real shocker: He tells her that Jeremiah Danvers murdered her father and orders her to assassinate him!

The Author of All Your Pain | But this backfires on Lex when Lena finally comes to her senses and offers her condolences to Kara after she hears of Jeremiah’s death. Lex witnesses this and sets yet another complicated plan into motion, by convincing Brainy that Myriad could help Supergirl find the missing VR users. When Supergirl heads to the Fortress of Solitude to do this, the energy from Myriad interferes with Lena’s mind control project, convincing Lena that Kara is screwing her over. Lena uses Lex’s teleporting watch to go to the Fortress and cuss Kara out, sending their friendship right back to square one.

Turns out that Lex secretly sent an invisible alien assassin with Lena through the portal to free a sun eating monster from the Fortress to attack the sun. Supergirl and J’onn fly to stop it, and for some reason, M’gann arrives from out of the blue to stop the beast. But this was all a diversion from Lex to frame Margo for the missing users and kill her, pretending to be the hero yet again.

Cooper is furious that Lex killed Margo and turns into a crazy looking electricity wielding goddess to teach Lex a lesson, before Lex tells her that he only did it to throw Supergirl off their trail and that Supergirl needs to die. When Lex returns to the Luthor mansion, Eve is there to romance him, but Lex not only turns her down, he reveals that he will kill her mother if she betrays him AND that Jeremiah did not kill her father and he has footage of her killing him that he will use against her! Amazingly, it gets worse as Lex uses the teleporting watch to break into the Fortress of Solitude.
