Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem just hit us with another fantastic episode! In it we saw another crazy Spree attack, we see how Alder keeps her health, and Beltane begins with the introduction of men! ‘A Biddy’s Life’ was written by Brian Studler and directed by Amanda Tapping. Here is what went down!
Male Witches | The episode begins with one of Alder’s Biddy’s looking weak as she’s getting ready in the morning. All the other Biddy’s around her are murmuring how it is their favorite day of the year. Outside, buses are pulling up to Fort Salem full of male witches and the Witch Father. All of Fort Salem’s witches are cheering and welcoming the boys as they get off the bus, it’s basically like a meat market for men. Tally (Jessica Sutton) is basically drooling over them, but one guy in particular catches her eye. Gerit Buttonwood (Kai Bradbury), who grew up with Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams). Tally practically needs a cold shower by the time they need to head to training.
At training, they’re working on scrying colors of hidden flags in the room, and Tally seems to be the only one nailing it. It turns out she’s doing so well because the men are there! Sexual desire seems to charge their powers up!
Elsewhere in the country, there’s another Spree attack at a community pool. A Spree member posing as a lifeguard used an inner tube to pop and instantly freeze the water and anyone in it, killing them.
Back at Fort Salem, the witches are introduced to Berryessa Tansey (Jill Morrison), an instructor there to teach and guide them through Beltane. Berryessa encourages the ladies to meet and get to know, and basically hook up with, as many men as possible. Some of the ladies join the men in a game of lacrosse where Tally and Gerit hardcore flirt. Raelle (Taylor Hickson) also meets a guy, but he’s insulting her choice of girlfriend.
That guy that confronted Raelle also talks to Scylla (Amalia Holm), and it turns out his name is Porter and he’s Scylla’s ex. He wants to know why she’s there, because they both grew up as draft dodgers.
Abigail ends up with two attractive men wrapped around her finger. Tally and Gerit are definitely into each other, and Raelle goes off to confront Porter. He apologizes for what he said to her earlier, then he fills her in on his history with Scylla. Then he warns her not to get too attached.

Memorial Hall | Walking through Memorial Hall, Tally fills Gerit in on the Biddy’s importance to Alder. Gerit tells Tally, “Everyone knows women are stronger than men.” And he is absolutely right! I love this show so much for saying that!
While Abigail is elsewhere hooking up with both men from earlier, Tally, Gerit, and Raelle go to see their Witch Family Trees. Scylla catches up to Raelle and the two of them go off on their own through the rest of the Hall. Raelle finally gets Scylla to open up about her past a little, and she finds out Scylla and her family were dodgers until her parents got killed. That’s when she decided to enlist. She also promises Raelle that if she does decide to run, she would take Raelle with her.
In another part of the Hall, Abigail is putting Libba (Sarah Yarkin) in her place after Libba retells the story of a battle but left out the part where a Bellweather was the real hero.
Unbearable Sadness | Porter goes to Scylla’s room to confront her, he wants the truth. He thinks she’s Spree, and Scylla does a god job pretending to be hurt by the accusation. She surprised the hell out of me by kissing him, but she also whispers into his ear, “I am filled with an unbearable sadness.” He looks dazed and leaves.
Tally and Gerit go for a romantic moonlit stroll where Gerit impresses Tally with his owl communication skills. He also gives her a flower ring he made before kissing her. Go Tally!
Raelle is on her way to see Scylla, but when she’s right outside her girlfriend’s building Porter comes crashing through a window and lands on the ground right in front of her. Raelle panics and calls for help before doing what her mother taught her to do, so she tries to save him. But his injuries are too severe and he dies right before she passes out.
The Hague | While all of this is going on, General Alder (Lyne Renee) is on the other side of the world at The Hague meeting with other important Generals to discuss what should be done about the Spree. It is clear that not all of the Generals there support Alder. One General reveals unheard seeds from a nomadic group between Russia and China. Alder somehow recognizes them, saying they are, “in my blood.” This group of nomads refuses to become militarized, and although most Generals seem to support finding them and obtaining those seeds, Alder won’t allow it.
The sick Biddy from the beginning is now obviously dying and it’s having an effect on Adler as well, she looks much older. Anacostia (Demetria McKinney) has another Biddy candidate for Alder once she returns to Fort Salem.
Back at Fort Salem, Anacostia is congratulating a recruit, telling her she’s the new Biddy, and her duties are to start now. She takes her to Alder and the other Biddy’s.
Alder and the Biddy’s are surrounding their dying comrade, who upon death reverts back to being young. Alder then initiates the new Biddy by draining her of her youth and aging her, all while Alder looks young and healthy again. So that’s how she’s been able to survive 300+ years!
