“Legacies” Recap: Hope Mikaelson’s Least Favorite C-Word

It’s a very “Legacies” Christmas in “This Christmas Was Surprisingly Violent,” which has tons of surprises in store for our heroes as holiday cheer comes early to Mystic Falls, forcing Hope to reluctantly team up with Clarke. Landon tries to reunite Rafael with his birth parents, while Lizzie and Sebastian take a road trip.

Christmas in October | As snow hits Mystic Falls, everyone at the school is suddenly overcome with Hallmark level holiday cheer, except for Hope and Lizzie, the latter Hope sends to go find Landon and bring him home since the monsters are back. Meanwhile, Clarke convinces Hope that he will sacrifice himself to the Malivore pit on the condition that he can enjoy Christmas.

Landon, meanwhile, takes Rafael to North Carolina where he found proof of Rafael’s heritage there. When they arrive, a guy named Walt takes them to a cabin and reveals that he is Rafael’s human father, but his werewolf mother ran away after she found out she was pregnant.

Another Loophole | Clarke tells Hope that the monster causing the festivities is a Krampus, before he makes his holiday wish for the monster to rescue him and take him to the pit. But when Krampus arrives, he tries to kill Clarke before Hope intervenes.

As Lizzie takes Sebastian on the road to meet Landon, she wisely abandons him on the side of the road before trying to convince Landon to come back to the school, only for Sebastian to arrive and snap Landon’s neck. After lots and lots and LOTS of verbal foreplay, Lizzie finally sleeps with Sebastian on the spot and he convinces her to let him go to the school.

A Christmas Brawl | Now, it’s time for this episode’s absolutely bonkers/thoroughly satisfying final act: Alaric crossbows Krampus and then none other than Santa Claus himself comes out of Krampus’s bag and proceeds to battle the beast in quite possibly the most epic moment of any holiday episode of any show. Santa flat out rips Krampus’s heart out before leaving his gifts for the students, including a ’75 Corvette for Kaleb and a headmaster plaque for Alaric.

Landon returns to the school and tells Hope that he needs to do something and proceeds to tearfully tell Josie that although he doesn’t regret being with her, he does love Hope. He and Hope finally kiss, just as Clarke is decapitated by a cloaked figure, with his severed head going into the Malivore pit, sealing it up. The cloaked figure reveals himself to be, and trust me, you’re not going to see this coming- The Necromancer!!! Um, huh?

“Legacies” returns with new episodes Thursday, January 16 on The CW.
