“Supergirl” bids adieu to an old friend in “In Plain Sight,” in which Kara and Nia get to the bottom of William Dey’s exploits, while J’onn and Alex try to capture Malefic. James and Kelly get a culture shock when they return to their hometown.
On the Case | As Alex enlists Lena and Brainy to fix the Phantom Zone projector, Nia unearths dirt on William Dey, namely that his wife is just a stock model from Google and he just received the address of Elena Torres in Mexico City. When Kara arrives at the address, Torres is dead in her car and William is leaving the scene. Supergirl finds a mystery woman in Torres’s apartment who uses superpowers to fight her, but she turns the tables- literally, she stops her with a table- and brings her to the DEO.
As Lena installs a mystery gadget on the Phantom Zone projector for nefarious purposes, Malefic sneaks into the DEO and posses Alex to verbally attack J’onn about him erasing Malefic from existence- For the record, this is like the fourth time Chyler Leigh has played an evil Alex.

You Can’t Go Home Again | James takes Kelly to their hometown which is now such a poverty ridden hellhole, that homeless kids are crashing in James’s aunt’s house and he not only doesn’t mind, he makes that kid, Simon, dinner. Simon’s mother got ten years in prison for a minor theft due to a really screwed up prison system and James’s old newsman pal won’t do much about it. James calls a lawyer friend of his to take Simon’s mother’s case and promises to cover the fee, but Simon gets really pissed when James says he’s going back to National City??? Dude, the guy is paying for your lawyer, don’t piss him off!
Family Matters | J’onn and Kara figure out that Malefic took control of Alex and Malefic demands that J’onn come alone to the planetarium. There, Malefic has Alex in a bomb vest and a crowd of people mind controlled to shoot at Supergirl when she shows up. Fortunately, J’onn phases Alex out of the bomb vest and Supergirl blasts Malefic back into the Phantom Zone. At the bar, Brainy makes amends with Nia- so their drama was for nothing- and James announces to the team that he’s moving back home to take over the newspaper there to take on the corruption. Aside from a few upset faces, everyone seems surprisingly okay with this! “Spies Goodbye” this ain’t.
Meanwhile, Kara goes to confront William and he reveals that he’s undercover at CatCo to investigate Rojas and he actually faked Torres’s death to protect her as a source. Kara agrees to help him, as Malefic wakes up in Lena’s lab- that’s right, she hacked the projector because she wants to use Malefic’s mind control powers for her evil plot. Lena is full blown evil now, how do you like that?
