In season four, Supergirl faces a bigger threat than she’s ever faced before – a new wave of anti-alien sentiment, spreading across National City that’s fomented by Agent Liberty. As Kara mentors a new reporter at CatCo, Nia Nal, and tries to use the power of the press to shine a light on the issues threatening to tear the city apart, Supergirl takes to the skies to battle the many villains who rise up in this era of divisiveness. But how does Supergirl battle a movement when she, herself an alien, represents one of the main things people are fearful of?

For its fourth season, “Supergirl” decided to eschew more traditional comic book antics for a timely and insightful tale of division, alienation and acceptance- and gave fans its best season yet as a result. Taking on the sadly all too real topic of fighting hatred and fear of “the other,” the Girl of Steel faced tough challenges, as well as the viewer, in a slightly wish fulfillment filled season for those still reeling from real world issues.

As with any “Supergirl” season, there was a LOT packed into 22 episodes- new characters, new villains, new character dynamics and teases for the upcoming fifth season. Fortunately, this year managed to juggle all these elements much more successfully than past seasons, cleverly waiting until the season’s final arc to tie it all together with the introduction of Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor as the mastermind behind everything. The buildup was 100% worth it as Cryer created not just the best “Supergirl” villain to date, but one of the best interpretations of the classic character ever.

But Cryer wasn’t the only MVP of the season. Nicole Maines made her debut as transgender superhero Dreamer and pretty much stole the show. It was fitting that a season all about acceptance and persecution against those that are different added a fresh perspective to the proceedings and adding a trans character simply made the season much better. Not to mention that Maines was absolute dynamite in the role and held her own with the rest of the cast, feeling like she’s been there the whole time.

While “Supergirl” season four had a few missteps- the episode “Man of Steel” chief among them- they were ultimately minor in the long haul, as fans got to see a whole new dimension to the super heroine. With season five right around the corner, it’ll have to come out guns blazing to top this exciting and timely season.

The Blu-Ray and DVD Set Contains the Following Bonus Features:

Elseworlds: The Three Night Crossover Event (Blu-Ray Only)
The complete three part “Elseworlds” crossover is presented on the Blu-Ray set, which ought to satisfy the hardcore fans of the Arrowverse, but won’t be friendly to those who strictly follow “Supergirl” and none of the other shows.

Inside the Crossover
Similar to the above, a behind the scenes peek at “Elseworlds” that will likely confuse viewers who don’t regularly follow the Arrowverse.

Villains: Modes of Persuasion
A 35-minute piece that takes a fascinating look into DCTV villains and their motivations, rationalizations and how they achieve power. For some reason, “Gotham” and “Krypton” are heavily featured.

The Best of DCTV’s Comic Con Panels San Diego 2018
As per past “Supergirl” DVD sets, edited versions of all the Arrowverse’s San Diego Comic Con 2018 panels are presented here. In “Supergirl’s” case, we get the unveiling of Nicole Maines, the cast talking their characters’ journey and a great moment regarding the Legion of Super Heroes ring.

Gag Reel
Lots of flubbed lines, dance offs, censorship and cast antics presented here, which is derailed by a two minute reel of the show’s action scenes sandwiched in the middle for no good reason.
