“The Magicians” Recap: The East River Dragon

The Magicians again delivered an amazing episode this week! We get to see Fen and Margo team up, Alice revisits her mom, and the rest of the crew encounter another dragon! ‘Home Improvement’ was written by Jay Garda and Alex Raiman, and was directed by Joshua Butler.

Fillory Adventures | Fen (Brittany Curran) and Margo (Summer Bishil) don their adventure outfits and go look for the cat-lady prophet from Fen’s dreams. They come across a woman who claims to be her (Tara Karsian) and uses “visions” to get Fen and Margo to do her yard work. Eventually Margo catches the lady in her lies and gets her to reveal the truth about the real cat-lady to them. She is a questing animal called The Napster, and Fen must catch her in one of her dreams to find out what her destiny is.

Later, while dreaming, Fen is able to control her dream and catch The Napster (Lynn Andrews), but the destiny she gets is not a pleasant one. Fen’s destined to dethrone Margo.

Sex VooDoo Dolls | Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) and Zelda (Mageina Tovah) tell a very reluctant Alice (Olivia Taylor-Dudley) they need her help to rescue Harriet in exchange for helping her find Sheila (Camryn Manheim). Alice must go see her mother (Judith Hoag) and perform a spell with her to help Harriet. When Alice sees her mom it is immediate tension between the pair. Her mom doesn’t seem to want her around, and when her friend Carol (Gabrielle Miller) arrives she really tries to get Alice to go away. Carol wants to show Alice her new business product, sex voodoo dolls. Alice and her mom attempt the spell, but it doesn’t work.

Suddenly, some Librarians show up and Alice immediately believes her mother turned her in. After locking them out, Alice eventually learns that her mom actually turned Carol in for her sex dolls and has been trying to get Alice to leave the whole time so she wouldn’t be caught. Carol uses her sex voodoo dolls to distract the Librarians, allowing her to sneak out. Alice and her mom try the spell one more time after talking things out, and it works. They fixed their bond and it made the spell work.

Alice returns to Dean Fogg and Zelda, and they bring in Sheila. She’s in full Librarian clothes, and reveals she’s working for The Order. She believes she’s helping a lot of people and is happy working with them, but Alice warns her not to trust them.

Dragon Porn | The rest of the gang are working together to track down the next piece of The Monster’s body. Kady (Jade Tailor) introduces Pete () to Julia (Stella Maeve) and Quentin (Jason Ralph) and he tells them where he should look, the East River Dragon. They go to meet with her and instead speak with her Herald,Harold (Matthew Kevin Anderson), who gives them the task of finding the Dragon’s bottle of blue elixir before she will meet with them.

Q ends up heading to the Physical Cottage at Brakebills and is met with a very pregnant Poppy (Felicia Day). She leads Q to believe it’s his kid and somehow becomes strangely attached to it by the time Julia finds him there. Kady arrives and finds a dragon porn graphic novel written by Poppy and reads it, connecting the dots on what Poppy has done. She’s taken the elixir, which is actually dragon semen, from the dragon and somehow fertilized an egg. They quickly find the hidden egg but know not to touch it so they don’t form the same attachment to protecting it as Q and Poppy have. Penny uses oven mitts to pick it up, but still feels compelled to touch it so he licks it. Now 3 of the 5 are super protective of it. Julia grabs it and realizes it doesn’t effect her, so Kady draws her gun [which Julia looks totally turned in by] and protects them so they can get it back to the dragon.

They return it to the dragon, who is surprised to learn what Julia is. She later sends Harold the Herold to deliver Julia a message: find the binder to rectify her situation. Julia has no idea who or what a binder is, or how it would restore her godliness.
