“Supergirl” Recap: My Bloody Valentine

“Supergirl” returns before yet another hiatus with “Menagerie,” an episode that tries to tie up multiple storylines into one episode with mixed results. Kara tries to help Alex capture a symbiotic alien, which brings out the more protective side of her sister. Nia makes a decision about her superpowers, while Lena is offered an intriguing deal.

Heartless | First up in this very busy episode, an alien meteorite crashes next to the car of a jewel thief named Pamela and latches onto her body, causing her to go around town eating peoples’ hearts. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, too! Also, Haley arrives back in town and goes to offer Lena the chance to use her technology to give the military superpowers. When she tells James about the offer, he refuses to support the idea and she not only breaks up with him, but agrees to Haley’s proposal.

Detective Work | Also, Lockwood is visited in prison by his family and his son George takes over the Children of Liberty, while Nia invites Brainy over to her roommate’s Valentine’s party. Kara tries to help J’onn solve a missing person’s case and the trial leads them to the home of a jewel mogul whom the missing guy was having an affair with. Kara and J’onn find both of them dead just as Alex and the DEO arrive. Although they don’t get arrested, Alex is incredibly irritated that Kara was at a crime scene.

They find samples of alien DNA at the crime scene and go to Nia’s party to give the samples to Brainy for analysis. There, Kara gives Nia a pep talk about using her powers and also fills her in on Alex’s mind wipe, while Alex herself runs into an ex girlfriend, Becca, who wants to start things up again.

The Missing Piece | Brainy finds Pamela’s DNA in the alien sample and when they go to bust her, Pamela “injures” Kara, but of course she laughs it off and tells Alex it was nothing. Alex orders Kara to stay out of danger, leading Kara to the natural conclusion that Alex’s fear of her getting hurt is getting in the way of her having a family. Actually, that hasn’t happened for a long time and that has very little to do with the mind wipe!

But whatever, Pamela and the alien worms inside her attack a gala, and somehow George finds out about it and shows up to kill her. After Supergirl fights Pamela, Nia dreams that Supergirl is in danger and suits up in her spectacularly badass super suit to… hit the worms with a crowbar a few times?… A+ for effort, though! Unfortunately, George chops the alien worms off of Pamela and the Children of Liberty get all the credit for saving the day, which Haley doesn’t seem to want to correct for reasons.

Afterwards, Alex chats with Kara and realizes that worrying about Kara’s safety shouldn’t get in the way of having a family. But happiness is short lived, as the President releases Lockwood from prison and Pamela receives a note from Manchester Black in her prison cell, while also revealing that she still has a worm inside her.

“Supergirl” returns Sunday, March 3, on The CW.
