“Runaways” Recap: Game. Changer.

Well, it’s the halfway point of “Runaways'” second season, so it’s time for a Marvel tradition: A game changing shakeup of epic proportions that will leave you wondering what the hell will happen next. In “Last Rites,” Jonah’s sinister plan is set into motion, forcing both the Runaways and the Pride to make choices that will change everything.

Fight for Your Family | After last episode’s big reveal, Nico is seriously pissed off at Karolina for keeping the circumstances of Amy’s death from her. So much so, that when Karolina confesses to the group that she’s been meeting with Jonah, Nico outright says that they can’t trust her anymore. But after Karolina points out that her family is at the bottom of the dig site, Nico immediately turns around and is gang ho to rescue them! I get that Nico’s a hormonal teenager, but this is a little extreme!

Right Where We Need to Be | The captive Geoffrey agrees to help the Runaways break into the dig site to rescue Karolina’s family and stop Jonah. As Karolina, Nico, Molly and Chase dive down into the hole to try to free the ship’s occupants, the rest of the Pride arrive to try to kill Jonah with Dale and Stacey’s serum. Everyone except for Frank, who gets jumped in a parking garage by Destiny Gonzalez’s vengeful brother with a gun. Frank tries to take the gun from him, but accidentally shoots and kills him.

The Choice | The Runaways emerge from the hole to face off against Jonah, who orders someone named Xavin (Nerdgasm alert!) to start the ship. The ground starts to shake, proving that Jonah was lying about the ship’s taking off having no consequence. He tries to get Karolina to come with him, but she refuses. Then Dale and Stacey fire their serum into the ship, destroying it, but several beams of light emerge from it and seem to fly off with a mind of their own. Hmm.

Jonah starts taking his rage out on everyone, prompting Nico to dip the end of the Staff of One in the serum and stab Jonah through the heart! For some reason, Karolina is devastated, even though he just tried to kill everybody, but Jonah’s ominous last words are, “Now we’re going to take it all.” Then Jonah suddenly seems to not know who he is or where he is, before he disappears. Nico uses the Staff to knock out the Pride so they can escape back to the Hostel, where Karolina is furious at Nico for killing her father. Again, he was kind of a monster! But there’s still six episodes left, so clearly there’s more to the story!

“Runaways” is now streaming on Hulu.
