Earlier this summer, OMFGTV headed to the San Diego Comic-Con to get scoop on Freeform’s Siren. During the show’s panel, the cast and Executive Producers teased what fans can expect for the mermaid drama’s upcoming season.
LOST | The inaugural season for Ben Pownall (Alex Roe) put him through the wringer. He left having lost everything — his girlfriend, Ryn, and kind of lost his mind. In Season 2, Roe tells us that viewers will see him trying to get himself together. “I think the whole journey is quite relatable,” he says, “the idea of can you trust yourself and can you trust that your intentions really are good. I think that’s what Ben was struggling with through Season 1. Now that he has some clarity on that, he’ll be able to act accordingly.”
BALANCE | For Fola Evans-Akingbola’s Maddie Bishop, Season 1 was all about finding her direction, especially when Ryn comes into town and turns everyone’s lives upside down. “She’s definitely lost her balance,” Fola says. Hopefully, her when her estranged mother enters the picture, her balance will be regained. “She’s heartbroken [with her breakup with Ben] and then the bond with her mom coming back is an extra pressure that I think is going to be really interesting to explore in Season 2.”

The actress says that she’s “really excited” for Maddie to explore her independence and family dynamic that she has going on, “which I think is a universal thing we can all relate to.
“She’s kind of created her own family with Ben and Ryn and I mean that family as well as her mom who is coming back. I think that’s going to be really exciting to see how that affects how she deal with everything that’s thrown at her.”
When Fola got news that one of the cliffhangers in the finale was going to be the return of her mother, she says she was “excited” to hear about that and that she can’t wait for viewers to know more about her and what she’s been doing. “There’s a lot that has happened to Bristol Cove and her daughter Maddie in the ten months that she’s been MIA,” she explains. “It’s going to be really interesting to see how much she finds out and how we deal with that. When I read that [finale] script, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, she’s back!'”
SIREN SONG | Executive Producers Eric Wald and Emily Whitesell say that the siren song is definitely a part of the show’s mythology and reveals that possibly more of the leading characters would also get sirened! They also explained that the song has different effects on different people and Season 2 is “really going to dive into it” because they love it.
“We get more into it in the new season and what it means and that it can affect people in different ways,” Wald shares. “We embrace the traditional mythology from all over the world and then we like to sort of put our own spin on things a little bit.”
