SYFY’s The Magicians is back with it’s fourth season! When we last saw our magical friends, they had saved magic but unleashed some sort of monster. All of them save for Alice had their identities and images rewritten and were sent into the world to live new lives away from magic. ‘A Flock of Lost Birds’, written by Sera Gamble and directed by Chris Fisher, introduces us to the new characters our magical buddies have become and reveals all kinds of crazy twists. Let’s get into what happened!
Alice | Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) hasn’t had her identity changed and is instead still being held prisoner by the Library. The man in the cell next to hers, who turns out to be freakin’ Santa, becomes her friend and is very upset when he’s forced to call for help because Alice has slit her wrists. But Alice’s plan was not to kill herself, but instead to get a look outside of her cell. She finds a cockroach and holds it in her mouth until she is back in her cell after being healed. She uses a small amount of paint from the walls, which contains magic, to see through the cockroach’s eyes and discovers there may be a way out.

Julia/Kimber | Julia (Stella Maeve), whose new identity is Kimber, winds up at Brakebills where she is greeted by Todd (Adam DiMarco) [who tries but is not E] and takes the entrance exam. She seems to be failing, but Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) insists she stay. He knows her true identity and must have orchestrated getting her the Brakebills education Julia always deserved.
Josh/Isaac | Josh (Trevor Einhorn) is now Isaac, and he is a driver for a car service like Uber or Lyft, and still seems to be a pretty relaxed and likable guy.
Penny/DJ Hansel | Penny’s (Arjun Gupta) new identity is a Juul smoking DJ that goes by the name DJ Hansel. Though we didn’t know Penny23 very well, I think it’s safe to say DJ Hansel is pretty different.
Margo/Janet | Margo (Summer Bishil) is now Janet, which ic what the Librarian called her the first time they met seasons back. She runs a fashion magazine and barks orders all day, living her best life. But for some reason her eye keeps bothering her so she is instructed to wear an eye-patch. She’s also being visited in her dreams by something Ember left behind (Dominic Burgess), telling her as High King she needs to fix whatever’s going on in Fillory.
Kady/Sam | Kady (Jade Tailor) went from doing crimes to arresting the people who commit them as a detective named Jesamin, Sam for short. Sam is investigating someone who tells her she’s protected by powerful magic. She does some research and comes across hedge witches and magic online, but every time she tries to really read into it something bad happens. Then she discovers there’s a graphic novel called A Flock of Lost Birds that describes not only her life, but the lives of others. She knows she has to meet these people, but every time she begins to even think about what could really be going on things start flying. He stole the hedge witch’s protection amulet, but who knows how long that will last.
Brian/Quentin | Quentin (Jason Ralph) is now Brian, but as we know from the season three finale, he’s also got the monster with him who has taken up residence inside Eliot’s body. Now, the monster (Hale Appleman) is just making Brian witness and be a part of his evil crimes, including the murder of the ice cream man. The monster tells Brian of his plan to kill all of Quentin’s friends for what they did to him in the season three finale.
Getting Together | The first person Kady/Sam tracks down is Margo/Janet, who takes a little convincing but reluctantly believes her. Then she also tracks down Josh/Isaac and Penny/Dj Hansel and they all get together to try to figure out what to do. While discussing their next move, Marina23 (Kacey Rohl) walks in and offers to help.
Marina takes them to her place and sets up protection wards. She wants to restore the groups memories and physical identities, but it doesn’t work.
While knocked out, Janet gets another visit by Ember, who zaps her to Fillory to fix whatever the problem is. Uh-oh.
