“Van Helsing” Recap: Luck or God?

This week on SYFY’s Van Helsing things got a bit religious when Scarlett and Axel stumble across a man whose only weapon is prayer. Jolene and Phil survive a bus crash just to end up on the run. ‘Christ Pose’ was written by Jonathan Walker and directed by Leslie Hope, and here’s what went down!

Back Together | After 23 days on that island Vanessa left her on, Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) escapes it [after finding a life raft under the bed]. Scarlett makes it to the feed store Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) told her to meet him at just as he’s leaving. She chases him and he stops, they have their cute reunion then go scavenging for gasoline. The truck won’t start when they’re trying to leave, then they suddenly begin to hear SOS being tapped out in morse code and go to investigate. It was a trap, they’re surrounded by Day Walkers in a matter of seconds. In the fight Axel picks up an old gun and shoots at a vamp, but the barrel was jammed and it ends up blinding Axel. Scarlett saw a man walk by them and do nothing while they were fighting the vamps, so she takes Axel and they go looking for him to help. They find the man, Simon (Jeff Kober), and he has no qualms helping. He cleans Axel up and bandages his eyes to heal.

Simon and Scarlett chat over a meal while Axel rests. Simon opens up about his faith in God and how he’s a pacifist who doesn’t fight, yet he’s somehow still alive. Scarlett doesn’t believe any of this would be happening if there was a God. Simon says he’s still going to pray for Axel to get better anyway.

Axel has an infection and needs medicine, so Scarlett convinces Simon to take her to get them. She refuses to leave Axel behind, so they carry him along on a stretcher. They find an abandoned ambulance and get antibiotics, but on their way back they come across a giant horde of Day Walkers. Axel and Scarlett want to fight, even though Axel is still blind, but Simon tells them to sit in the tall grass they’re in and stay still. Scarlett thinks he’s crazy, but surprisingly it works. The horde passes right around them.

Back at Simon’s camp, Axel isn’t getting better. He tells Scarlett to go off and help her sister and just in case he doesn’t make it that long, he tells her he loves her. Scarlett refuses to let Axel die and has a crazy idea when she comes across an injured Day Walker.

Scarlett makes the Day Walker bite Axel, and thanks to Vanessa’s bite last season, Axel heals. Not only the bite heals, but his infection goes away and his eye sight returns.

Scarlett and Simon say their goodbyes, with him still insisting everything happened the way it did because it was God’s will, and gives her his hat for Axel. As they’re walking away, Scarlett talks to Axel about everything that happened and it seems like she may be starting to believe in God. She then turns to look back at Simon and sees hi walking on water and she’s astounded. But in reality, we see that Simon is just standing on an underwater platform.

Crash | Phil (Vincent Gale) and Jolene (Caroline Cave) are on the bus to Love Loud when one passenger attacks the guards and they crash. The pair flee the scene and hide in an abandoned house. They try to break the chain on the cuffs keeping them together, but no luck. Phil wants to keep moving forward and go to Love Loud, but Jolene wants to go back to Denver and find Sara. At an impasse, they get cozy and open up about their relationships and feelings, and Jolene tells Phil he needs to forgive himself for what he did to his children.

Phil and Jolene are woken up by the sounds of a guard outside looking for them. They knock him out when he gets inside and steal his weapons, shooting their cuffs apart so they are no longer attached. Then they take off before the guy wakes up.

They come to a sign that points the way they each need to go, but a guard shows up with a gun pointed at them and is ordered to shoot to kill. He shoots and Phil blocks Jolene and takes both bullets since he can’t die. But they both fake dead long enough for Phil to knock out the guard when he got too close. Jolene realizes now she can’t go back to Denver, so she agrees to help Phil find his wife if he agrees to help her finds Sara after.
