SYFY’s Van Helsing‘s sixth episode of the season is probably one of our favorites so far! We see Vanessa fighting for her sister and Axel’s lives, Phil take his life, and learn about some bad side effects from the vamp vaccine. ‘Like Suicide’ was written by Jeremy Smith and Matt Venables and directed by Jason Priestley.
In Denver | Phil (Vincent Gale) isn’t handling life very at the moment and continuously goes to Julius’ (Aleks Paunovic) bar job to bug him and get very drunk. Doc (Rukiya Bernard) and Jolene (Caroline Cave) seem to be doing well as they walk home from a night out, when they are attacked by a vampire that snuck in. It goes after Jolene but doesn’t bite her, giving Doc time to protect her woman and kill it! Jolene is certain she didn’t get bit because of the vaccine.
The next day at work, Jolene gets attacked by Jared (Aidan Kahn) who seems to be extremely angry for no reason. She goes to tell Doc and then snaps at her, leading Doc to a theory that she tests. She thinks the vaccine may be the cause of the aggression, and after testing it on rats she finds she is correct. She tells Jolene and they report it to their supervisor, who reveals she is already aware of the side effect and wants to keep it quiet because the vaccines still work. Doc and Jolene know they the people getting the vaccine deserve to know about the aggression side effect. I have a feeling this could lead to some trouble for the pair in the future.

At the bar, it’s open mic night and Phil is DRUNK. A very cheesy comic goes up and tells a few poor vampire jokes. Phil decides he needs to educate this man and everyone else in the bar on what it’s like to be a vampire. He tells them how he killed his kids and they taunted him, not believing what he’s telling them. He ends up bringing out a gun and shooting himself in the head in front of all those people. But, presumably due to Vanessa’s (Kelly Overton) bite, he instantly heals and plays it off as a stunt. But later he goes to the top of a building and prepares to jump. Julius rushes up to try to talk him out of it, revealing that he’s found Phil’s wife and she’s there in Denver. But Phil doesn’t think he can face her after what he’s done to the family. He tells Julius he forgives him, then steps off the edge and plunges into the ground below. He definitely didn’t heal immediately this time, but I’m not totally sold on him being permanently dead yet.
Facing the B’ah | In San Francisco, Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) and Patterson (Blair Penner) are tied up, the only survivors of the ninja vamps attack. But Patterson doesn’t last long once the B’ah (Jennifer Spence) arrives. He is a snack for her. She tries to turn Axel so that he could kill Vanessa, but she quickly realizes he can’t be turned. So instead she sends his dogtags with some of his blood on them to Vanessa as an invitation for her to try to save him. Vanessa already has to fight the B’ah in order to save Scarlett (Missy Peregrym), so being “invited” really works out in her favor. She tastes Axel’s blood in order to get revved up and track him. Barry (Michael Jonsson) notices and clumsily follows. When she calls him out, Barry says he wants to help and cuts his palm and offers his blood to her. Vanessa quickly turns away, eyes turning red, and angrily tells him to go before she kills him. She doesn’t trust herself to stop after just a little blood anymore.
She finds Axel tied up in the B’ah’s lair, and cuts one of his hands free before taking on a group of the ninja vamps and making sure Axel was free/safe. After taking them all out she fights the B’ah. She’s able to stab her opponent through the side and Axel stabs her from the other side, pinning the B’ah in place so Vanessa could cut off her head and collect the totem.
They rush back to Scarlett’s side and feed her the B’ah’s blood to cure her. Once she’s up and moving, Axel reveals he’s going to stay with this SF group and guide them to safety in Denver. Scarlett isn’t happy about it, but Vanessa promises her sister that she will see him again. Then Vanessa reveals her true plan to her sister. She wants to kill the last two Elders but instead of destroying all the totems, she wants to use them to raise the Dark One and kill it. Scarlett doesn’t like the plan, but she’s on board.
