“Legacies” Recap: Dragon’s Den

For its second episode, “Legacies” takes inspiration from some great shows for “Some People Just Want to Watch the World Burn,” in which Hope and Alaric team up to track down the missing Landon, while Josie and Lizzie clash on how to handle a school flag football game. Alaric is shocked to encounter a creature never seen before.

Spilling Secrets | After Hope gets counseling from the school’s psychologist Emma, she and Rafael load up with Alaric to track down Landon and the missing knife. After going into the woods where the scorched bus was found, Alaric meets a mute woman who, after stealing his phone and watch, breathes fire at him. While that’s going on, Hope and Rafael find Landon in the basement of a shack and Landon conveniently can’t remember stealing the knife, but says that the mute woman burned the bus to get the knife from him and he escaped.

Win By Losing | In an entertaining detour reminiscent of the classic “Friends” football episode, Josie, Lizzie, MG and Caleb lead the Salvatore Stallions flag football team agains the Mystic Falls High School team. Josie wants the team to lose fairly to keep up the illusion that they’re not a magical school, but after a losing streak, Lizzie tells the team to use their magical gifts to their advantage. But during the potential game winning Hail Mary, Josie uses a spell to make Caleb drop the ball.

Everybody Lies | As Alaric communicates with his fellow teacher Dorian on how to kill the woman, the woman pulls off one of the coolest reveals in the history of the VD-verse: She turns into a dragon! That’s right, freakin’ dragons are in the VD-verse! Great job on expanding the mythology and throwing in an awesome surprise! “Legacies” is so far giving off a very “Buffy” vibe, which is always a good comparison!

Hope uses a black magic death spell to incapacitate the dragon and finish her off, but Alaric catches her using the death spell and tells her that that’s her father’s way of thinking. When Hope and Alaric return to their car, they find a note from Landon and Rafael, who both scrammed during the chaos, and Landon apologizes to Hope via the note and promises to keep the school’s secret. Later that night, Alaric and Dorian discuss the dragon in the room and Alaric is understandably concerned about the new supernatural threats they’ll be facing, while also missing the living gargoyle in their yard.
