In the fourth episode of this season of SYFY’s Van Helsing, we learn more about Sam’s past and Ivory and Scab undergo a transformation. ‘Rusty Cage’ was written by Jackie May and directed by Michale Nankin.
Lady in Black | We glimpse more of Sam’s (Christopher Heyerdahl) past when he relives childhood memories of his time spent at the juvenile detention center. As a small Deaf child, he was an easy target for the worst bullies in the detention center. A kind guard tells Sam he needs to defend himself, so the next time those boys pick on him he knocks them out and badly beats them. Sam is then visited by the mysterious Lady in Black, who tells him to make a weapon and keep it somewhere safe. Sam makes a weapon and uses the bullies teeth on it. The guard who tried to earlier help Sam is now certain Sam hurt the bullies and asks to be led to them. When they get to the boys who are badly beaten but still breathing, Sam uses his new weapon to kill the guard.

In the present, Sam finds that weapon again in a trophy at the juvenile detention center.
Day Walkers | Ivory (Jennifer Cheon) and Scab (Rowland Pidlubny) encounter the group of Day Walkers and Ivory is turned by one. When the group leaves, Ivory ends up biting Scab, turning him into a Day Walker as well. They head back toward the Sisterhood to change them, but encounter 4 sisters running towards them in warning. The Sisterhood’s base has been destroyed.
Trapped | Sam is trying his best to turn Mohamad (Trezzo Mahoro) into a creepy vampire like him instead of just the typical hunt and feed type. But Mohamad is not progressing the way Sam hoped, he’s too obsessed with feeding and won’t take his time to savor the hunt. The come across the group that calls themselves the Johnson’s again, and Mohamad follows a little girl and Felix (Bzhaun Rhoden) down into a bunker. The girl gets out and as Felix flees Mo, Sam picks him up out of the bunker and locks Mohamad inside. Sam stands over the skylight so Mohamad can see him and bites Felix, turning him. Sam tells Mohamad through the glass that he is now the mouse. And it looks like that mouse is trapped.
