The second episode of SYFY’s Van Helsing‘s third season follows the Van Helsing sisters as they go in search of the totems to take out the Elders. ‘Super Unknown’ was written by Neil LaBute and directed by Jonathan Scarfe.
Lillian | The episode begins with a flashback to the early 1900’s, when Lillian Van Helsing checked herself into an asylum to try to take out vampire living there. Unfortunately this vamp had an advantage and kills Lily. Now, over a century later, Vanessa (Kelly Overton) and Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) are at the same asylum looking for the first of the Elder’s totems.
Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) bribes a man with a Kit-Kat bar to help them find their way, but as soon as they got what they needed the Elder Susan (Hilary Jardine) fed on him. Vanessa’s eyes strangely glow red for a moment, then they head inside the asylum where they are greeted with a new type a vampire with psychic abilities. The sisters fight and kill most of the vamps, then Scarlett bites one who turns back into a doctor from the asylum.
The doctor says he remembers a Lillian Van Helsing from his time there, and says she’s buried out front. The ladies find the plot and begin digging it up, looking for the totem, and Axel goes with the doctor to find shovels.

Not a Doctor | Turns out the doctor isn’t really a doctor, but a madman. He was a patient here when Lillian came and was turned by the crazy strong vampire, now that he’s human again he’s bak to his madman ways. He ties Axel up and electrocutes him until he’s unconscious. After he wakes, he gets the doctor talking and discovers where Lily is really buried, then breaks free and completely demolishes the “doctor”.
Changing | While Scarlett and Vanessa dig, Scarlett confronts her sister about being so closed off to her. Vanessa confesses that the Elder bit her to wake her up and it changed her, now she’s craving blood.
Axel makes it back and tells the sisters where Lily is really buried, and they head off to the mausoleum. But first they have to take out the vampire with psychic abilities. Axel and Scarlett are effected by his powers so Vanessa orders them back and takes the Elder with her, which turns out to be a great move. When face to face with the vamp, Vanessa is effected by his powers and can’t fight him, but the Elder can. Susan Elder sneaks up behind the vamp and easily tears into and destroying him.
Show Her | In the mausoleum, the team finds Lily Van Helsing, perfectly preserved and with the Elder’s totem on her wrist. She is also clutching a blood-stained dagger, which the Elder begs Vanessa not to touch, so of course she picks it up. The Elder says Lily must have fought the Ba, another very powerful Elder. Vanessa wants to prepare for the Ba and asks for the Elder’s help to teach her how to beat it. The Elder decides it’s more practical to show her, placing its hands on Vanessa’s temples and sending her to Hong Kong in the early 1900’s.
