AMC made their first appearance at WonderCon 2018 in Anaheim, CA and brought along Into the Badlands! OMFGTV made sure we were in attendance in the pressroom to get all the season 3 dirt from Daniel Wu, Alfred Gough, Lorraine Toussaint, and Nick Frost.
Baby | In the tail end of season 2 Sunny (Daniel Wu) became a single father, leaving the question of how a baby will fit into this post-apocalyptic steampunk world? Showrunner Alfred Gough was there to shed some light on that bit of the upcoming season. “The baby actually plays an integral role in the season. It’s not just, ‘Oh look, Sunny has a baby!’ And then you never see the baby again. So without spoiling anything, the baby plays a big role.”

The Widow | By the end of the second season The Widow has lost pretty much everyone close to her and possibly her strong position of power. Will anyone try to swoop in and try to take her place, or will she try to fight her way back to the top? “She’s really trying to sort of get herself back. The things that she did in season 2, she’s gonna have to deal with and come to terms with them.” Her actions will be dealt with, according to Gough. “The Widow still looks like a better option than Chao.” The Widow also reunited with Nathaniel Moon, who will have a tricked out steampunk hand this season.
Cressida | This season the Into the Badlands cast welcomes Lorraine Toussaint as Cressida. Cressida leads Azra, which comes to include MK, and has its own language. Lorraine actually learned the language and spoke a few word to us, but did not say what it meant. Coming into the show in its third season meant Lorraine had a lot of content to catch up on, which she most definitely did. “I watched the first 2 seasons back to back, and realized I hadn’t seen anything like this on television. And I’ve been wanting to get into this genre for the longest time.”
Themes | Fatherhood and motherhood have been big themes throughout the first two seasons, but with so many characters relationships evolving, will we still see those themes? In short, yes and no. Those themes will still be there, but according to Gough it will be more “parents and children” than motherhood and fatherhood.
Things to Look Forward to | Though Nick, Lorraine, Daniel, and Alfred couldn’t say much about season 3, they did give us little teases of what’s to come.
- Bajie fights with a dead octopus! “There’s a fight scene in a market place where I use a dead octopus as a nunchuck.”- Nick Frost
- “The first fight of the season with The Widow and Moon, is very in the vein of Crouching Tiger and House of Flying Daggers, but then you also have a lot of comedy as well this year.”- Alfred Gough
- A lot more interaction between characters earlier on in the season! “This season we wanted all those stories to crash into each other sooner. So you’re going to see a lot more interaction between the characters.”- Alfred Gough
- Tilda and The Widow have some sort of relationship, but it’s changed. “Now Tilda sees her mother in a different way, and they have to come back to each other, in a much more adult relationship than they had before.” – Alfred Gough
- Lots of amazing fight scenes! “Daniel’s first fight in episode 1 of the season is very brutal, hand to hand no wires. The first fight of the season with The Widow and Moon, is very in the vein of Crouching Tiger and House of Flying Daggers, but then you also have a lot of comedy as well this year.”- Alfred Gough
Be sure to catch the Into the Badlands season 3 premiere on AMC Sunday April 22 at 10pm!
