Following a two month hiatus, “Supergirl” returns with more somber storylines in “Schott Through the Heart.” Winn’s criminal father dies, prompting his estranged mother to come out of hiding to reconnect. Mon-El reveals a secret to Kara and Alex must keep a secret of her own from J’onn.
Out with a Bang | Kicking off this unusually deep episode is- a karaoke party? Alex gets drunk, James surprisingly crushes it and Kara raps. This gets quickly crushed when Winn sees on the news that his father is dead. Everyone comforts him at his dad’s funeral, including Mary, his estranged mother, played by “Lady Bird’s” Laurie Metcalf. The reunion is cut short when Winn’s dad’s coffin explodes and Mary suspects that someone has taken up his father’s mantle. This leads to Jeremy Jordan’s strongest performance in three seasons as he confronts his mother for abandoning him, telling a story about her not showing up after his father’s arrest.

Always Two, There Are | After flying robot monkeys attack the DEO- never thought I’d say that- Mary discovers a clue on one of them and heads off to a toy factory where she is captured by Nimball (Brooke Smith), a janitor at the prison Winn’s father was held in who took over his business. Supergirl and company battle a group of robots in a really creative action set piece before Winn manages to overpower Nimball. Bye, pointless villain!
Slipping Away | While this is going on, Alex has dinner with J’onn and M’yrnn and discovers that M’yrnn has the Martian equivalent of Alzheimer’s and is slowly forgetting his life. J’onn eventually finds out and hugs it out with Alex at the bar. Mon-El also tells Kara that Imra deliberately steered the Legion’s ship to present day Earth to fight off the third worldkiller, who in the future, attacks the Legion. Speaking of worldkillers, Lena is off in some secret lab with a drugged up Samantha and lying to James about where they both are.
