“Legion” Season Premiere Recap: Are You the Magic Man?

I’mma level with you folks here: I have no idea where season 2 of “Legion” is going after “Chapter 9.” I just know it’s going to make season 1 look like a children’s show. Noah Hawley and company clearly threw out what little rule book there was for this show and I can’t quite tell if it payed off yet, but something tells me we’ll know in time. Okay, let’s dive in…

The Madness of Crowds | David is found in a mysterious location by Ptonomy and Cary, along with several people frozen in place, their teeth chattering in a supremely creepy fashion. David is brought back to the Division 3 headquarters and is astonished to find out that it’s been a whole year since the orb sucked him away from Summerland and since then, Syd and Melanie have convinced Clark and Division 3 to let them join forces to find the Shadow King’s true self.

The Catalyst | After some mind sex, Syd explains to David that the “Catalyst” is infecting people to be frozen in a catatonic state and the Shadow King influenced Oliver was seen right before all occurrences. Also, Melanie is now a drugged up couch potato, seeing some weird guy on wheels, so we’ve gotta deal with that. Cary plugs David into a “Fringe” like tank to amplify his psychic powers to find the King’s true body, leading to one of the best sequences “Legion” has given us to date, as David finds himself in a club, locked in a dance battle with Oliver and Lenny.

The Machine that Bleeds | David also meets with Admiral Fukuyama, the basket wearing leader of Division 3, who speaks through identical mustached women- If I was making this up, I’d check myself into a hospital. Fukuyama tells David that if the King finds his body, he’ll be unstoppable. Later that night, David remembers what happened inside the orb that took him: He saw an older Syd from the future talking to him via a light wand and telling him that he needs to help the Shadow King find his body. Um… Okay…?
