“Agents of SHIELD” Recap: Future Proof

“Stitchers'” Salli Richardson-Whitfield directs this week’s “Agents of SHIELD” episode, “Inside Voices,” as Coulson makes an unlikely alliance to escape Hale’s prison, while Simmons goes to drastic lengths to try to free Fitz. Daisy drags Robin back into the fray, leading to an unusual reunion.

The Invincible Three | Now that she knows she and Fitz make it to the Lighthouse, Simmons is convinced that she, Fitz and Yo-Yo are unkillable. She is so convinced of this, that in a roundabout effort to get Mack to free Fitz, she plays Russian Roulette with three glasses of water and one glass of acid. Three glasses into shots from hell, Simmons nearly dies, forcing Mack to free Fitz- and then Yo-Yo locks him inside Fitz’s cell as Simmons reveals that she was faking near death, but still filled one glass with acid. And Mack thought Yo-Yo was being unreasonable! Anyway, Simmons, Fitz and Yo-Yo speed off in a Quinjet to track down HYDRA’s safe houses.

Alliances | Hale is trying to get Creel to fuse with Gravitonium to become the Destroyer of Worlds in the event of Daisy, you know, not wanting to destroy Earth. Naturally, Ruby is not pleased with this, seeing as she wants to destroy Earth, apparently. Creel ends up confronting Coulson in his cell and Coulson reveals that Hale has Talbot locked up. Creel breaks the pair out and helps them escape Hale’s facility, but Ruby wounds and potentially kills him to prove herself to Hale.

Are You My Mommy? | Daisy and May pick up Robin and her mother, but Robin isn’t even drawing futures anymore. But when Robin sees May and calls her Mommy, much to her real mother’s shock, she reveals that she has seen her own death and Coulson’s as well. She manages to draw up a sketch of the location where Coulson and Talbot escaped to and the Zephyr heads in that direction.

Also, in the stinger, a flashback reveals a blast from the past: Raina agrees to give the Gravitonium to old school villain Ian Quinn, only for him to be swallowed up by the substance. Nice to see Ruth Negga again, but what was the point of that?

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Fridays at 9pm on ABC.
