“The Magicians” Season Finale Recap: The Castle at the End of the World

The Magicians finales are known for their crazy cliff-hanger endings, and this season 3 finale was no different! The episode was visually stunning and just when you think you know what’s going to happen, BAM, something else totally crazy and unexpected happens. The shows creators Sera Gamble and John McNamara wrote the episode, ‘Will You Play With Me?’ and directed by Chris Fisher. Here’s what went down on the wild finale!

Goddess Julia | While her friends are deciphering the book for their quest, Julia (Stella Maeve) gets pulled into another realm by the goddess Iris(Madisen Beaty). Iris tells Julia that she is a goddess now and needs to leave her friends to do her godly duties. Surprisingly, Quentin (Jason Ralph) is very understanding of Julia’s situation and is okay with her leaving before they finish the quest. But before leaving, Julia gives Q a little bit of magic, enough for one spell, just in case they need it.

Julia meets up with Iris again, she can still feel her friends, but Iris says she needs to basically cut them off. She can create worlds and do all kinds of other things, her friends will only get in her way.

The Architect | Josh (Trevor Einhorn) saves the day again by figuring out they need to find the Architect, because she’s the witch in the story. Turns out it’s really Calypso aka Callie (Michaela McManus). The group goes to meet her, and she only speaks to them because of a promise she made to Prometheus (Georgie Daburas). She tells them everything they need to know: Prometheus was the maker of the keys and made them knowing they would need them to restore magic one day, that the castle is protected by a female knight who is there of her own free will and can leave any time she likes, and the location of Castle Blackspire…Fillory. She leaves them with a final warning, whatever is in the castle can’t get out, ever.

High King Fen | In Castle Whitespire, Fen is acting as High King. The Fairy Queen (Candis Cayne) comes to her letting her know that fairies are being hunted. Fen decides to pretend to be a fairy so she can get stopped by Irene (Jamie Ray Newman) and Gavin (Daniel Nemes), and she tells them to stop hunting fairies and tells them she has something they need in the castle. The Fairy Queen is there and makes them a new offer, that magic of 50 fairies–i.e. her–and no other fairies can ever be hunted again, oh and this deal can’t be broken. Right when we start liking the Fairy Queen she goes and sacrifices herself!

Dream Hopping | Q decides to use the little magic Julia gave him to jump into the dream of the knight, Ora (Alexandra Metz) in the castle. She says she can’t help because she can’t risk letting out whatever she is guarding, but Q comes with an offer. Ora is going to open another way into the castle for them so they can get in, turn on magic, and get out, but Quentin stays. He’s going to take Ora’s place. Margo (Summer Bishil) and Eliot (Hale Appleman) want to use their god-killing bullet, but Q won’t allow it.

Forgetting Herself | Alice (Olivia Taylor-Dudley) goes to Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) to ask for a potion to wipe her memory and give her another life. She has a vial of fairy crack that she intends to use to help with it, and he agrees and gives it over. Then Fogg goes to the Librarian (Mageina Tovah) to talk about their “arrangement.” What arrangement?!?!?

Alice goes and tells Q what she’s going to do, and admits to always loving him. That’s all she’s sad about forgetting.

Castle Blackspire | The quest crew meets Ora inside Castle Blackspire, she tells Q she’s there to love and coddle the monster like a child so he doesn’t get bored. Q meets the monster, it’s a boy who asks Quentin to play with him. Alice spies on Q and snorts some of her fairy crack. Suddenly Eliot jumps out and shoots the boy with the god-killing bullet. It seems to have worked, but Ora disappears. As everyone prepares to turn magic back on Alice comes in and DESTROYS ALL THE KEYS. WHYYYYYYYYY ALICE WHYYYYYYY? She’s afraid of all the bad things that come with magic and thinks she is protecting them by doing this. Alice runs off and into Ora, who has been possessed by the monster. Alice knows the monster that can’t get out is still alive!

Goddess Julia swoops in to save the day! She uses all of her power to make new keys, like Prometheus. But doing so leaves her mortal.

They grab the keys and turn magic back on! But seconds later Gavin, Irene, and Dean Fogg show up with the siphon and attach it to the fountain, giving The Library control of who has access magic. Then Fogg give them all the potion that makes them forget who they are and start new lives! WHAAAAAT?!?!?

Brakebills re-opens, but they clearly have trouble with frequent magic blackouts. Because Alice broke her deal with The Library she is kept a prisoner by them, unable to forget her life or warn her friends about the monster getting out and going after them.

In their new lives Josh is a driver known as Isaac, Margo is Janet [which is her characters name in the books, good easter egg writers!], Julia is teaching at the Tribeca Center For The Arts, Penny23 (Arjun Gupta) is a DJ, Kady’s (Jade Tailor) selling drugs, Quentin goes by Brian, and Eliot is the MOTHER EFFING MONSTER!!! Monster Eliot finds Q/Brian, which means he’s in danger.
