WonderCon: “Agents of SHIELD” Cast Talk the Quest to Save Coulson and More!

With “Agents of SHIELD” currently in the middle of its fifth season, OMFGTV met up with the cast and executive producers behind the series at WonderCon to discuss the direction of the final episodes of the season, including the race to save Coulson’s life, a potential series finale and much more.

The series recently revealed that Coulson is dying and although he seems to want to die on his terms, the rest of team SHIELD, notably Daisy and May, are desperate to save him. “Coulson is everything to Daisy,” said Chloe Bennet, who plays Daisy. “And so, her number one priority is going to be making sure that he stays alive.”

Ming-Na Wen, who plays May, revealed that her character is equally driven to save Coulson. “I don’t think there’s an inkling of doubt that if there’s a chance to save Coulson, she will take the Earth being torn apart rather than lose Coulson.”

Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb sees an interesting debate in the decision to save Coulson. “The people who watch the show would make the same decision because they love Coulson so much. It is that question, who is more selfish? The individual who decides ‘I don’t want to do this anymore,’ or the people that say ‘We’re going to take that choice away from you because we love you that much.’ It all comes from love.”

A newcomer to the series, Jeff Ward is excited about the reveal that his character is the future grandson of Fitz and Simmons. “Space and time travel are two of my favorite things to pull tropes from, between ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Star Wars,'” Ward said. “When my character got to time travel, I saw a lot of Marty McFly, especially when he learned that FitzSimmons are his grandparents. When he finds out and they don’t know, I got so excited because it’s literally Marty McFly!”

Executive Producer and show runner Jed Whedon could neither confirm nor deny the rumors that season five will be the show’s last. “Even if it’s the end of a story, there’s always more story to tell,” Whedon said cryptically. “Provided the world doesn’t disintegrate.”

Whedon also teased the impact that the upcoming release of “Avengers: Infinity War” will have on the series. “It is one universe, so the events of that film will affect us,” Whedon said, while also confiding, “Over the years, we’ve become our own story. Initially, we were really tying in just to branch off of that, but now I think it’s much more rewarding that we’re self contained. That being said, we didn’t venture into space until the films did. We didn’t venture into magic until ‘Doctor Strange.’ They blaze the path and we get to play in those new parts of the park.”

In the potential event of Daisy becoming the new director of SHIELD, Bennet said, “She would have everyone eat donuts. I would make sure we would have an episode where we eat for all the times we’ve never eaten on the show. I think that would be the most shocking thing we’ve ever done.” Jokes aside, Bennet disclosed, “I crave for them to find a bit of happiness and stability. I want Deke to go on a cruise!” “So does Deke!” Ward chimed in.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Fridays 9pm on ABC.
