WonderCon: “Agents of SHIELD’s” Iain De Caestecker & Elizabeth Henstridge Talk FitzSimmons’ Future, “Traumatizing” Events & More!

The heart and soul of “Agents of SHIELD” is the fan favorite relationship of Leopold Fitz and Jemma Simmons and with the pair having been through trials and tribulations aplenty, the show’s 100th episode saw them finally marry.

At WonderCon Anaheim 2018, OMFGTV spoke with Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge about the duo’s recent wedding, where their relationship goes from here, and the shocking events of the newest episode, “The Devil Complex.”

“At every stage of it, we’ve always thought, ‘They’re like brother and sister and then, oh no, they’re romantic,'” Caestecker said of the FitzSimmons dynamic. “But at every stage, we think that’s as far as it’s going to go. I think we never thought we’d get through it.” “We always thought there would be some disaster or some explosion, but they rocked it, didn’t they?” Henstridge said with a smile.

“We were both a bit nervous,” Henstridge said of shooting the wedding scene. “Reading a speech in front of people, even though it’s make believe, is quite nerve-wracking.” “That relationship has been built up over a long time,” Caestecker said. “We kind of started this journey together, we’re the same age and we’re both foreigners. It was nice having a moment like that to connect.”

But wedded bliss for the couple was short-lived, as “The Devil Complex” revealed that Fitz is essentially split between his normal self and his HYDRA alter ego, The Doctor. “I can’t believe that they brought him back,” Henstridge said. “I was traumatized with him being back. But I found Iain’s performance amazing.”

Caestecker addressed the couple’s future, saying, “I think no matter what happens, they’re always going to end up together. At the end of the episode, I said, ‘I don’t know where we go from here.’ It was more of a reference to the question at hand that we have to make these questionable decisions.”

The pair also addressed the recent revelation of Deke being their future grandson. “I think it gives [Simmons] a lot of comfort,” Henstridge said. “Because there is a reality in which they live long enough to have a child who has a child. These characters never get much certainty about their future. That feeling of knowing that everything’s going to be okay and we’ll be together.”

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Fridays at 9pm on ABC.
