“The Magicians” Recap: Another Lifetime

As we near the season’s end, Syfy’s The Magicians knocked our socks off again with another incredible episode! ‘Twenty-Three’ brings back old favorites while also exploring how our favorite characters lives were different in the 23rd time loop compared to where they are now in the 40th and final time loop. The episode was written by Henry Alonso Myers and Mike Moore and directed by Meera Menon.

Dick Josh | Josh (Trevor Einhorn) and Julia (Stella Maeve) go off on their own key quest adventure when they get pulled into a Tesla Flexion from timeline 23. That Josh needs this Josh and Julia to get to their timeline and help them defeat the Beast [who wears a key around his neck], but there’s a catch, they also don’t have magic. After leaving Alt-Josh, Julia wants Josh to accompany her to Fillory, but when they went through the clock portal they ended up in timeline 23 with Alt Josh. They quickly meet Alt Marina [Yay!!!!] (Kacey Rohl) and get filled in on what’s been going on.

Alt Josh and Alt Marina surprise our heroes by drugging them and tying them up, they intend to use them as bait for the Beast. Julia proves she’s a badass and easily gets out of her bindings, then goes to Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) in search of the Rhinemann Ultra. He sends Julia to the haunted part of the library, where she finds Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo’s (Summer Bishil) ghosts, revealing exactly how they died in this timeline.

Alt Penny (Arjun Gupta) joins the party and immediately kisses Julia when he sees her, only to find out that she’s not his Julia. Josh is fighting with Alt Josh and nicknames him Dick Josh for not telling him about some werewolf thing called The Quickening that’s coming.

The Beast shows up and immediately kills Dick Josh. Julia uses the Rhinemann Ultra, but it doesn’t work. Though the spell does reveal who the Beast is, Quentin (Jason Ralph).

Turns out that Alt Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) decided to bring Q back from the dead after she spoke to our Q and Julia back in season 2. Only Quentin did not have his shade when he was brought back, which lead him to become The Beast that he fought so hard to defeat.

Boats and Bunnies | They track down Alt Alice on a board filled with bunnies, working for them. She reveals she has the God-killing dagger, but she can’t wield it. Lucky for them Julia can. They go to the castle where Beast Q is staying and try to use Alice to distract him so they can destroy him, but of course that doesn’t work. He kills Alt Alice and is going to go for Julia when she does something unexpected, she gives him her shade. He suddenly feels guilt and remorse for all he’s done as the Beast, he grabs the dagger and kills himself, right next to Alice.

As Josh waves the key around waiting for a portal to appear, Alt Penny tells Julia he plans on going with her since their Penny is MIA. And guess who also dashes through the portal as soon as it opened? Marina. We’re getting more Marina in our timeline!!!!

The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Syfy.
