If you thought “Agents of SHIELD” wasn’t open to taking risks in their fifth season, boy howdy, “The Devil Complex” proved you wrong. Fitz’s HYDRA self resurfaces, putting the team at risk, while Coulson prepares to make a deal with General Hale to save SHIELD.
Evil Twin | As more and more fear dimension induced apparitions start attacking the team, Deke, who has been super awkward around Fitz and Simmons, gets knocked out by the Framework version of Fitz, The Doctor. This is timed with two security cameras going dark and Daisy gets knocked out by a robot soldier trying to turn them back on.

Overzealous | Coulson, May and the eager to redeem herself Piper capture General Hale in her car, but as Coulson interrogates her aboard the Zephyr, the driver of the car turns out to be Carl Creel, who threatens to bomb the Zephyr if Coulson doesn’t leave with Hale and the Superior, who is somehow working for Hale. Coulson agrees to the deal, much to May’s dismay, on the condition that his team goes free. Oh, and the final scene is Hale talking to the “Confederacy” who tells her “Hail HYDRA.”
What’s Necessary | The Doctor captures Daisy and Fitz confronts him as he tries to remove the inhibitor from Daisy’s head. Just then, Simmons storms in and here’s the kicker: Fitz is alone with the scalpel in his hand. Turns out there was no Doctor and it was all Fitz, a-la “A Beautiful Mind.”
Simmons is rightly horrified as Fitz removes the inhibitor from Daisy’s head in a roundabout way to get her to fuse the Gravitonium together to stitch up the fear dimension, but later tells the imprisoned Fitz that it was the right thing to do. And just for good measure, Deke calms the crying Simmons down by revealing to her that they’re related. And then Simmons throws up. Promising.
