Syfy’s The Magicians delighted fans with their latest episode, the musical episode! In the past The Magicians has given us one measly musical number per season, but this season took it up a notch by giving us a musical episode that contained four songs! ‘All That Josh’ contained “Wham Bam,” “All I Need is the Boy,” “Car Wash,” “Under Pressure,” and as a bonus we even got a very poorly sung “Happy Birthday!”
Good Vibes Only | Quentin (Jason Ralph), Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), and Kady (Jade Tailor) discover the next clue in their quest for the seven keys, and it’s a musical clue. When Kady plays it on the piano it immediately transports the trio to the cottage in an alternate universe, a universe where Josh (Trevor Einhorn) is the man and the vibes are always good. The trio seems shocked to have landed in this weird showchoir universe where party magic is possible and everyone is led by Josh, but they go along with it to try to find the fifth key. But it doesn’t take them long to figure out what’s really going on, there’s a demon there that is feeding off of Josh’s happiness, so it created this party mecca just to make Josh happy so he could feed off of him.
They need to distract Josh’s ‘Good Vibes’ dudes so they can get him alone to figure out if he knows how to get out of there, and who’s better at distractions than Kady? She does her best ventriloquist act and dazzles the crowd by channeling her mother while performing “All I Need is the Boy.” Unfortunately Todd (Adam DiMarco), or should we say Fake Todd, discovers Kady’s trick and sends all the Good Vibes minions after the trio + Josh. Even though Josh is mad at his friends for forgetting about him, he decides to help them break out and sings “Car Wash” to distract everyone. During this time, the trio finds the fifth key hidden in the piano, and it provides an exit for them. But it also connects them with Penny (Arjun Gupta), Julia (Stella Maeve), Josh, and Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Summer Bishil). They all belt out “Under Pressure” like their lives depend on it–which they do–and break the spell Fake Todd set for Josh, but he reveals this was all a test. This was part of their quest to restore magic.

Frozen | Julia and Fen (Brittany Curran) know they need to help Skye (Anja Savcic), so they return and have the fairy meet them in the lab. Julia tries to teach Skye how to do magic the way magicians do it, but Fen points out that fairy’s don’t have to access magic, they are magic. Next Julia tells Skye to try to grow a rose from her palm, and it begins to work but Skye’s necklace starts to vibrate and begins killing her. Julia’s eyes glow and she freezes Skye in time to figure out what the hell is going on. This is when the trio found the key and connects them all together. Julia heals and unfreezes Skye all while singing “Under Pressure,” no pressure at all!
Don’t Go Chasing Infinite Waterfalls | Margo and Eliot have been sentenced to death in Fillory, but lucky them, they get to choose how they die! They pick death by the Infinite Waterfall because they think it’ll give their friends more time to save them. But Tick (Rizwan Manji) quickly explains that they will crash into rocks, freeze, or starve, so he’s pleased with their choice. This is also where Tick reveals he’s actually evil! Or at least he’s against humans ruling Fillory and wants to go back to ruling it [he ruled before these humans arrived].
Tick and a few cronies accompanied Eliot and Margo to the waterfall aboard the Muntjac. “Under Pressure” occurs while they are barreling towards the falls. The Muntjac refuse to obey Tick, causing him to flee the ship on a raft, and goes over the side with E and M aboard. Lucky for them, the Muntjac FLIES! This ship may have just become one of our favorite characters this season!
Our Questing Crew now has 5 of the 7 keys they need to restore magic, where do you think key number 6 is?
The Magicians airs Wednesdays at 9pm on Syfy.
