“Van Helsing” Recap: There’s a New Kind of Vamp in Town

The penultimate episode of Syfy’s Van Helsing‘s second season was a quite the game changer. In the episode several of our favorite characters reunite in Crooked Falls only to face a new kind of horror. ‘Crooked Falls’ was written by Jonathan Walker and directed by Paul Johansson.

She’s Gone | The episode opens with Scarlett (Missy Peregrym) dreaming of her father, but it turns into a message from the Elder. He can no longer sense Vanessa (Kelly Overton), so now he’s turning his powers to her. He wants her to come to him. Does this mean Vanessa is dead? Not necessarily, but it definitely seems like she’s out of commission for the time being.

Crooked Falls | Everyone eventually makes their way to Crooked Falls. Axel (Jonathan Scarfe) is piiiiissed at Doc (Rukiya Bernard) for letting Dmitri (Paul Johansson) kill Julius (Aleks Paunovic) and get the key. He doesn’t believe Doc when she tells him she tried to fight and save Julius, but based on his experiences with her Axel chooses not to believe her story. Flesh (Vincent Gale) and Lucky (Andrea Ware) only make it to Crooked Falls because they run into Callie (Macie Juiles)–the girl who never dies– and Joline(Caroline Cave) in the woods. Callie has a map attached to a red weather balloon directing them to Crooked Falls. After arriving, Lucky makes a startling confession to Flesh, she’s pregnant. At first she says she’s going to have Doc take care of it, but after a discussion with Flesh it seems like they want to have this baby. Callie surprises everyone at the end of the episode when she fixes the radio and gets in contact with someone who says he’s sending someone to their location.

Opening Up | Reunited with Jolene, Doc seems to relax and open up a bit more. There was a romantic vibe between them at the beginning of the season, and now it’s back! Could there be love in the air for Doc, or should we call her Sarah? She finally revealed her name to someone she trusts enough with her truth.

Game Changer | The biggest twist in the episode comes when Scarhead (Teach Grant) returns, revealing 2 things. The first is that he and his group of vampires have different abilities than the others, they can walk in the daylight and rapidly heal, even from head shots. The second reveal is that Julius is alive! Scarhead and his buddies have tried to turn Julius but are mad that he stays human. He’s brought him back for answers, luckily they’re able to get him inside safely, where he reveals that Doc really did try her hardest to save him.

UnLucky | Lucky and Flesh go outside to investigate something when they’re surrounded by the new vamps. The rest of the group is unable to save them because they somehow got locked inside. After Lucky gets bit, Flesh holds her while she shows she has a grenade. She pulls the pin and it looks like Flesh may have crawled away before the grenade went off, but one thing is for sure, Lucky is definitely gone.

Mother | Another big twist comes at the end of the episode when we learn who the boss (Andee Frizzell) of Crooked Falls really is…Vanessa and Scarlett’s mother .

What is going to happen now that Scarlett and her mother have been reunited? They’re leaving the rest of the group behind while they must meet and deal with whoever Callie’s made contact with.

Van Helsing’s season 2 finale airs Thursday January 4th at 9pm on Syfy!
