Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s classic Marvel comic series, “Runaways,” has finally arrived on Hulu with the first three episodes now available for streaming. This new series manages to tread the perfect balance between staying faithful to the original story and adding new drama for this exciting pilot, “Reunion.”
Meet the Runaways | Much like the comic book, “Runaways” introduces 16 characters in rapid fire fashion. First up is Alex Wilder (Rhenzy Feliz), sulking over the death of his childhood friend, Amy Minoru. His parents, Geoffrey and Catherine, (Ryan Sands and Angel Parker respectively) encourage Alex to reconnect with his old friends. Meanwhile, Amy’s sister Nico (Lyrica Okano) is grieving in her own way, by going Goth and stealing her deceased sister’s tights.
Next up is Karolina Dean (Virginia Gardner), the poster child for her parents’ totally-not-a-cult Church of the Gibborrim, whose newest member, Destiny, was recently rescued from the streets. Chase Stein (Gregg Sulkin) is struggling in classes, irking his abusive father, Victor (James Marsters). Finally, Gertrude Yorkes (Ariela Barer) and her adopted sister Molly Hernandez (Allegra Acosta) are dealing with Gert’s oddball parents (Kevin Weisman and Brigid Branagh) and Molly’s unusual stomach aches.

#Blessed | The gang all goes to Atlas Academy, where Alex tries to get the six of them back together for the first time since Amy’s death. Nico pretends not to hear Alex when he pitches the idea to her and cries in the ladies’ room, where Karolina is also shedding a tear because someone sent out a picture of her with the not entirely inaccurate “#Brainwashed.” Karolina tells Nico she doesn’t have to hide who she is, to which Nico responds: “Some people hide behind makeup, others behind a smile.”
Elsewhere, Molly tries out for cheer squad, but gets a stomach ache in the middle of her routine. When she goes to the nurse’s office, she crushes the table with her bare hands. Upon returning home, she pushes a runaway (no pun intended) car away from her and also sees something in the Yorkes’s basement.
Welcome to the Dark Side | Karolina Lyfts a ride over to a frat party and within 30 seconds of arrival, is offered a pill. She dances the night away, but after seeing two girls making out, decides to take off her church bracelet that she can’t remember taking off. Ever. Then her arms start glowing before she passes the F out and Chase’s pals try to have their way with her. Chase beats the crap out of his friends and helps Karolina to her ride, assuming her “pretty lights” story is the pill talking. But Karolina never took the pill.
Chase, Karolina, Gert, Molly and Nico all end up at Alex’s doorstep, while their parents are having their Pride meeting. While Chase tries to raid Geoffrey’s liquor cabinet, Alex finds a secret passageway leading down to a hidden basement- where their parents drug up Destiny and shove her in a mysterious box.
Don’t worry, “Runaways” fans, there’s plenty more to come! The first four episodes of season 1 are now streaming on Hulu. The remaining episodes will be released weekly on Tuesdays.
