“Supergirl” Recap: The Past is a Scary Place

As Kara and Alex take a detour on “Supergirl’s” latest episode “Midvale,” the show delivers an emotional episode without one of its’ series regulars. Kara takes Alex back to their hometown of Middle, triggering a flashback to 2007, where squabbling siblings become best friends in the wake of tragedy.

Earth to Danvers | Younger Kara (Isabel Vidovic) is still adjusting to life on Earth and Alex (Olivia Nikkanen) is sick of looking out for her. But Kara’s friend Kenny is unexpectedly murdered and Kara suspects foul play, especially when she finds his missing laptop with pictures of Alex’s friend making out with a teacher. Of course everyone thinks he killed Kenny, while Kara sends the files on Kenny’s laptop to Clark’s unseen friend- Chloe Sullivan from “Smallville!” Even the Wall of Weird gets name dropped! Nice to know Chloe hasn’t been forgotten!

Tough Love | Speaking of “Smallville,” Erica Durance shows up as an FBI agent who is a dead ringer for Kara’s real mother? Okay, so it’s really J’onn in disguise, but he/she gives Kara a reason to pass as human even though Kara wants to use her powers to save the day. While Alex deduces that their pedophile teacher did not kill Kenny due to an alibi, Kara is resigned to not using her powers and letting the cops solve the case. Which turns out to be a bad idea…

Sisters on the Case | Alex tries to explain the situation to the town sheriff, who surprise, surprise, is the culprit. Kara finds out about it thanks to Chloe’s in the nick of time email and flies in to save the day. Following this, Kara and Alex are BFFs and in present day, the girls hug it out and drive off singing to Gwen Stefani.

PS: Great job on the casting of young Kara and Alex. They look exactly like I’d imagine those two would look as kids. Look at Olivia Nikkanen and tell me that’s not a young Chyler Leigh!

“Supergirl” airs Mondays at 8p on The CW.
