“Riverdale” Actress Camila Mendes Talks Lodge’s Family Dynamic, Teases Hiram’s Secret [Spoiler]

In the season premiere of The CW’s hit series Riverdale, Veronica and her mother Hermione was finally reunited with their father Hiram, played by Mark Consuelos. Now that the three of them are back to being a family unit, can Veronica and her parents find peace?

OMFGTV sat down with Riverdale actress Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica Lodge, this past summer to chat about what we can expect of the Lodge family dynamic in Season 2.

“Veronica is suspicious of both of [her parents]; doesn’t trust them,” Mendes tells us. “She really wants to have a good relationship with Hiram because she’s daddy’s little girl at the end of the day. She wants to please him and show him that she’s strong and that she’s capable of being a Lodge. She just wants to be a Lodge and take that name and that legacy. Her father, in trying to protect her, is keeping her at an arm’s length.”

Meanwhile, Ronnie’s relationship with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols) has fallen apart. “In Season 1, we used to brag about how close they were, and in season 2 they’re not anymore,” Mendes says. “There’s so much distance because of what Hiram has sworn Hermione to secrecy and Veronica is no longer part of that family unit and it’s her kind of coming to terms with that.”

Hiram’s arrival isn’t without its reasons, and Mendez reveals that Mr. Lodge has come to town with an agenda. “Her father is a scary, scary figure. He has a plan for Riverdale. He’s got something brewing and Veronica senses it and wants to be part of it, but he’s not letting her in and Hermonioe’s not letting her in and neither of them will talk about their plan.”

Right now their plan is being manifested in Hiram’s secret study, a private place off limits to the socialite. Mendez shares that it was a new set they had built for the new season.

“He has a study in the Lodge apartment and Veronica can’t go in there,” she says. She’s constantly looming over and staring at the room. I think that kind of summarizes where their relationship is.”
