“The Fosters” Recap: Family Troubles

The newest episode of Freeform’s The Fosters doesn’t tackle any huge issues, but instead reminds its audience that it is a family drama and it does that well. The biggest issue in this episode is Lena’s (Sherri Saum) parents are in town and Steph (Teri Polo) wants to get her father off the title for the house. Callie (Maia Mitchell) tries to define herself, Jude (Hayden Byerly) has trouble balancing his friends with his boyfriend, Brandon (David Lambert) gets pissed, and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) devises a devious plan to spend more time with her crush. ‘Chasing Waterfalls’ was written by Brad Bredeweg and Peter Paige, and directed by Chandra Wilson.

Self-Portrait | In art class Callie gets a bad critique on her self-portrait project because she didn’t take any of the photos herself. Her classmates feel like she doesn’t actually know who she is, which sends Callie down a spiral of self-doubt. Later that afternoon, Callie and Aaron (Elliot Fletcher) go on a hike where Callie verbally digests what her classmates comments meant. Aaron is comforting her and reassuring her the whole time, which leads to a steamy makeout sess under a waterfall. And eventually leading to the two going back to Aaron’s place to take their relationship to the next level.

Her time with Aaron gives her the confidence to open up to her art class about her past as a foster child, and no she doesn’t know who she is yet. They classmates all look proud.

Gay-mer | Jude is having scheduling conflicts between Taylor (Izabela Vidovic) and Noah (Kalama Epstein) which leads to some serious tension. Jude later receives an email from a gaming company, they want him to be a paid ambassador for a new game, but not Taylor. They want him to be their gay-mer.

Pick a Girl | Brandon is extremely upset about Gabe (Brandon Quinn) and Cortney (Denyse Tontz) kissing/dating, but tries to hide it. But he eventually blows up at them, prompting Cortney to move out and a very important conversation between them took place. Cortney pointed out that it’s normal to feel jealous when your ex moves on, it doesn’t mean you should get back together.

This was the push Brandon needed to truly move on from Cortney. He went to go see Grace (Meg DeLacy), proving he’s sticking with her.

She’s On To You | Mariana decides to help her crush, Logan (Christopher Meyer), win his girlfriend back in order to spend more time with him. But his girlfriend knows what she is doing and sends her a message telling her so. Looks like there’s going to be an awkward encounter between them at prom!

The Truth | Stef pushes Lena to talk to her mother about removing her father from the title of their house, just in case they run into more financial trouble. Dana (Lorraine Toussaint) takes offense, and asks them to actually start repaying the interest on the loan they gave them for the house. Stef and Lena are positive that money was a gift, Stewart (Bruce Davison) said so when he gave it to them all those years ago.

Stewart returns to the house one day with a car for his grandkids, and all three adult women are shocked. They can’t afford a car, and when Dana reminds him of that he says he has a bonus coming in. The problem is, Stewart’s retired. It looks like the early signs of Alzheimer’s, and Dana says it’s been going on for about a year. She agrees to immediately take Stewart off of the house title.

Things are getting pretty serious on the health side of things within the Adams-Foster family. Jesus (Noah Centineo) was absent from this episode, saying he was getting his assessment for school done, or that he was napping. What do you think Jude should do about the gay-mer offer? Should he take it and betray Taylor, or should he stick by his friend?

The Fosters airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Freeform.
