“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: Leap of Faith

The aptly titled “Agents of SHIELD” episode, “Farewell, Cruel World!” had Fitz vow to stop at nothing to put an end to Simmons and SHIELD. Daisy and Simmons must make peace with the sacrifices they will have to make to escape the Framework.

There were a lot of risks taken in this episode that paid off big time. For one thing, the team finds a way to escape the Framework, but Fitz is trying to kill Simmons after she kills his father. After a killer and heartbreaking confrontation between Fitz and Simmons, Radcliffe finally redeems himself by sending Fitz through the portal to the real world, but Fitz seems too shaken from his dark deeds on the other side. Will he recover, or his he too far gone?

But the biggest risk was for Mack to choose to stay in the Framework to be with Hope. While Mack’s rationale was understandable, it was still a moving way to see him go (for now). It also highlighted the interesting debate that is sure to go down: If you know something isn’t real, does that make it any less real?

Minor downside to this week was that Brett Dalton didn’t return for one last go round as Ward. But we still got a cliffhanger as a human AIDA teleported with Fitz to… somewhere.

“Farewell, Cruel World!” was a strong conclusion to our time in the Framework with good emotional resonance and a solid preview of what’s to come. Final two episodes of the season are on the horizon!

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays on ABC.
