“The Fosters” Finale Recap: What’s Happening With Callie?

The Fosters doesn’t do anything haphazardly, so of course last night’s season four finale was one for the books. We finally find out who killed Martha, why Anchor Beach might become a private school, and Diamond tries to find Russell. This is what went down in “Until Tomorrow”, written by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige and directed by Peter Paige.

Take the Plea or Take Our Chances? | Callie (Maia Mitchell) meets with her attorneys to review her options now that there’s a video of her inside Doug Harvey’s (Hugh Scott) house. They tell her she’s been offered a plea deal, but it’s not very good. If she pleads guilty then she will only get 3 years in prison, but Callie wants to avoid prison altogether. She didn’t do anything but run from someone who she thinks may be a murderer.

Later, Callie and Jude (Hayden Byerly) take a walk on the beach so she can fill her little brother in on the trial. She decides to leave out the plea, she doesn’t want her brother worrying about her, but she does tell him not to grow up to be like her. Jude is taken aback by this and tells her a secret, she’s his hero. That, in combination with getting back to her musical roots with Brandon (David Lambert), are exactly what Callie needs in this stressful time.

Stef (Teri Polo) has 24 hours before Callie has to make a decision about the plea, which means she has 24 hours to prove Troy (Levi Fiehler) killed his grandmother. Mike (Danny Nucci) questions Harvey’s whereabouts the day Martha was killed and made a huge discovery; Troy Johnson lied in his statement to police, he was at his grandmother’s that day. Mike and Stef take this info to a superior and get Troy to the station for questioning. Eventually he confesses to the murder, which means Kyle will go free and Callie should be able to get her case dismissed.

The Students Have Spoken | Lena (Sherri Saum) has a little chat with Drew (Jared Ward) about Anchor Beach going private. He tries to justify his decision for wanting to go private, but it all really comes down to more money for him. Lena is so upset she decides it is time for her to go back to work, but Drew warns her not to stir the pot with the students. Lena’s first act upon returning was to talk Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and the rest of the students out of an organized walkout–because they don’t want the school to become private–and promised them they could attend the board meeting that night so their voices could be heard.

But when it comes time for the board meeting Drew goes back on his promise and doesn’t allow any students or parents into the meeting. In the meeting Craig Stratos (Mark Totty) lays out his vision for making Anchor Beach private, and Lena makes an eloquent speech about why it should stay public. The board ended up passing the vote to move towards privatization, but Jude and the others waiting outside decide their voices must be heard. Jude decides that they need to create a human wall surrounding the auditorium and chant about how they don’t want to be a private school only for those that can afford $30,000 a year in tuition.

Diamond Gets Roughed Up | Diamond (Hope Olaide Wilson) is trying hard to get back to Russell (J.J. Soria), she’s afraid he’ll kill her if she doesn’t come back with a girl. She sees that Stef and other officers are staking out waiting for Russell to get her, so she calls 9-1-1 to distract everyone. When the police cruiser shows up it provides the perfect distraction for Diamond and Christina to sneak out. But Daphne (Daffany McGaray Clark) and Callie catch them. After Diamond begs them to let her and Christina go, Callie decides to take Christina’s place. She tells Daphne to go straight to Stef and have her track Callie’s phone to rescue the girls. And that would have worked out perfectly if Callie didn’t lose her phone and all her other stuff. Now Stef is chasing the wrong car while Callie is posing as a 16 year old aspiring singer for this man who wants to traffic her for sex.

Other Thoughts:

  • Jesus (Noah Centineo) finally finds out the truth about Emma (Amanda Leighton) and takes it well at first, but he once again becomes convinced that Emma cheated on him with Brandon. Now he’s got it in his head that Emma had the abortion because Brandon was the father, but really it’s because Jesus had a TBI and she couldn’t do it alone.
  • Mariana’s secret twitter was found, luckily no one knows who was behind it. But now all of Anchor Beach is trying to figure out who got pregnant.

What a great finale! Possibly their best finale yet! Callie thought she was going to prison so she went with Diamond, she has no idea Troy confessed to the murder. And now the police are off in the wrong direction while Callie is right under their nose. And now that the Anchor Beach students and parents have spoken up about turning the school into a private one, how will it play out next season? Will the school continue to push for privatization while so many students are parents don’t want to go that route? Now that Jesus knows about Emma’s pregnancy and abortion, will he ever be able to understand why she did what she did?
