“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: Buckle Your Seat Belt, Dorothy

Following a month-long hiatus and a crazy cliffhanger, “Agents of SHIELD” returns with “What If,” in which Daisy and Simmons awaken in the Framework, a virtual reality in which HYDRA has taken over. While Simmons tries to help an old friend, Daisy discovers the new world order.

With an alternate reality setup, things certainly got bleak on “Agents of SHIELD.” Think the alternate reality of “Back to the Future, Part 2” on Nazi steroids. HYDRA is in control and is policing the world, trying to weed out Inhumans with the help of Fitz, known as the Doctor, who surprise, surprise, is in a relationship with Madame HYDRA, played by Mallory Jensen. This is now the third character that Jensen has played in this one season, so kudos to her for taking on the Grant Ward role of season 4.

Speaking of, Ward is back and is actually a good guy in the Framework, a crazy and fun reversal of what we’ve come to expect from him. Seeing him help out Daisy and Simmons and resist against HYDRA will definitely be interesting. And the stinger suggests that Coulson has also realized that life is a lie, so the team will still be there, albeit a stripped down version.

“What If” kicks off the Agents of HYDRA storyline with promise and general creepiness. Here’s hoping what could be the last string of episodes for this show deliver on the fresh concept.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays on ABC.
