“The 100” Recap: Black Rain is Here

The 100, known for its dark themes, did it again in last nights dark episode! We saw sides of characters we’d never seen before, lots of anger, and even a suicide attempt. “Gimme Shelter” was written by Terri Hughes and Rob Milbauer and directed by Tim Scanlan.

Actions Have Consequences | A big lesson everyone learns this episode was that there are consequences for our actions, no matter how heroic our intentions may be. Harper (Chelsey Reist) learns this early on in the episode when the black rain hits. She doesn’t help someone who tripped trying to flee the rain, then she had to watch that man suffer a painful death because she didn’t help. Bellamy (Bob Morley) also learns this lesson the hard way when he tries to take the rover to rescue two of their people stuck in the woods during the rain storm. Bellamy sets off to rescue them against Kane’s (Henry Ian Cusick) orders–he’s still trying to make up for his actions last season–but the rover gets stuck in the mud before he can reach them. He has to sit in the rover and listen to them call for him over the radio, until the other side eventually goes silent. But if Bellamy had ignored Kane’s orders to stay in the rover, he would’ve died trying to save them.

Octavia Rebounds | Last week we saw Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) flee Arkadia after almost mirroring Lincoln’s murder with Ilian’s (Chai Hansen). This week we pick up with her in the woods on her horse, and Ilian is poorly tracking her. She threatens him to make him leave, but that’s when the black rain hits. She throws Ilian onto the back of her horse and they ride off in search of shelter together. They find a cave that luckily has fresh water in it, so they strip down to their undies and rinse all the burning water off. Ilian opens up about his past and pain, and he tries to get Octavia to do the same. Instead of talking about her pain, she just tries to run out in the rain to end it, but Ilian stops her. She tells him she needs to feel something again, then proceeds to seduce and sleep with him. The next morning she abandons her assassins knives and heads out with Ilian.

Back With The Bone Marrow | Remember how Mt. Weather used the grounders bone marrow in season two to survive the ground? Basically, Abby (Paige Turco) thinks she can do the same thing with the nightblood, but they need someone to test it out on. Emori (Luisa D’Oliveira) overhears Abby tell Clarke (Eliza Taylor) this and immediately assumes they will use her to test it because she’s the only one there expendable to them. She tells John (Richard Harmon)and begins readying for them to leave when she is attacked by an intruder. She tells them she knows him, that he did unspeakable things to her and her brother when they were younger, and that he will pay now. First we see just how strong Emori is when she beats the man with Clarke and Murphy looking on, then we see just how smart she is. Clarke decides this intruder is the perfect guinea pig for the nightblood experiment, so they test it on him…which is exactly what Emori wanted. She doesn’t actually know this man, but she knows they need someone to test the bone marrow on and it sure as hell wasn’t going to be her!

Other Thoughts:
• Abby is still struggling with the side effects of the EMP, but she refuses to tell anyone.
• Kane was amazing in this episode, we need more of his even-headed thinking as the story goes on.
• The idea of actions having consequences was woven nicely through the story, it was a very well written episode.
• Seeing Harper on her own without Monty was surprising and very enjoyable, it’s nice to see couples without their other half all the time.
• Emori is an evil genius and I am all for it!

Now that Octavia seems to be leaving her assassin ways behind her, where does she go from here? Will she return to her people and try to re-assimilate, or will she go with Ilian and start a new life in the woods–at least until the radiation hits? Clarke and Abby are doing exactly what Mt. Weather did to their people, what will be the effects if everyone finds out?

The 100 airs Wednesdays at 9pm on The CW.
