“The Fosters” Recap: Tree Houses Save The Day

By the end of the previous episode of The Fosters, we had learned that AJ flirted with another girl, Lena accepted students without permission slips into her off-campus LGBTQ sex ed class, and Jesus still can’t read. This weeks all new episode explores the fallout of all those situations and more! “Diamond in the Rough” was written by Cristian Martinez and directed by Lily Mariye.

AJ Is Set Free | Callie (Maia Mitchell) goes to find AJ (Tom Williamson)to make things right between them when she sees him kiss Dawn (Kara Royster). She later just assumes it didn’t mean anything so she doesn’t bring it up to AJ. But eventually AJ does bring it up. He loves Callie, but he also has feelings for Dawn. And being with Callie isn’t easy–that’s an understatement!

Before AJ ends things with Callie he updates her on his adoption situation, and she tells him to follow his heart and Mike (Danny Nucci) will understand. And Mike certainly did understand, after his initial disappointment he decided he still wants to rent that one bedroom apartment down the hall for AJ and his brother.

Monte Gets Stabbed In The Back | There are severe repercussions for Lena’s (Sherri Saum) off-campus LGBTQ sex-ed class, but the punishment falls on Monte’s (Annika Marks) shoulders. Because Lena is on leave and was just acting as a parent off-campus, the school had no need to get involved. But because Monte required Anchor Beach permission slips the fault is on her. She is asked to resign. Lena later finds out that Drew (Jared Ward), her temporary fill-in, was the one who ratted Monte out, not any parents. He’s being appointed Principal temporarily.

He Can’t Read, But He Can Draw | Jesus (Noah Centineo) is really struggling with his recovery, receiving thick glasses meant to help with his vision and reading. Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) discovers he’s turned to tree house shows and designing his own tree houses to take his mind off things. Mariana has the brilliant idea of making Jesus’ senior project, he could design it and they could commission Gabe to build it, they just need the school’s permission.

The Twins pitch the idea to Drew, but Lena later informs Mariana that Drew didn’t go for it, he doesn’t think Jesus will be attending Anchor Beach next year. Mariana takes it upon herself to make this her senior project so Jesus can still have something to work on. She doesn’t even tell him it’s her project now, just that they have to share it. She can add that to the list of things she’s keeping from her twin brother.

Diamond Wants To Go Home | Stef (Teri Polo) begins her new job as a detective in human trafficking and gets put on a difficult case. Diamond (Hope Olaide Wilson) is a teenage girl that works for a pimp named Russell. Diamond gets arrested on the job and Stef convinces her to help form a case around Russell and she’ll take her to Girls United instead of juvie. But all Diamond really wants is to go home, so she “borrows” a phone to call her pimp to pick her up. He tells her she can only come back if she brings another Girls United girl with her. She sets her sights on her mark and makes her first move.

Seeing Mariana and Jesus interact and act more like siblings made this episode very special, it brought back more of that family element between those two that we often miss. Callie is now single, and probably for the best, but will she remain single for long? I have a feeling Aaron may be showing up again once he hears Callie’s available. And you know Lena is feeling extremely guilty for Monte’s situation. What’s going to happen next week?
