The natural temperature means nothing when the frosty villains come out to play in this week’s episode of Powerless. Determined to prove her team isn’t “a bunch of nobodies”, Emily convinces Teddy to enter a company-wide design contest. Ron finds himself being taken advantage of when Van needs a bunch of favors while he gallivants on a weekend getaway with his new girlfriend. Here is what went down in episode five, “Cold Season”.
KEEP YOUR COOL | Cold Season is upon Charm City as all of the frozen villains start fighting with “freezy stuff”. Teddy (Danny Pudi) came prepared for the weather with his new invention of superheated gloves that can perform a whole host of thermal tasks. It just so happens Wayne Industries is holding a company-wide invention contest and Emily (Vanessa Hudgens) wants to use his gloves as their team’s submission. The rest of them are less than enthusiastic but between some mocking from a pair of walking Youtube comments and Emily’s insistence, Teddy gets on board. The gloves appear to be working perfectly but Teddy starts to spiral, convinced that they aren’t good enough yet and can’t be entered. Emily refuses to be beat by Tweedle Gross and Tweedle Sexual Harrasment, so she enters the gloves anyway. When she finds out, Jackie (Christina Kirk) warns Emily that Teddy has a tendency to become overwhelmed with achieving perfection to the point of willingly vacationing in Tampa. Emily lies to Teddy to calm him down and tells him he’s in the finals but that backfires when he starts bragging to his parents about it. When she finds out he lost the contest, Emily tracks down Teddy at home where he is with his parents and perfect space doctor brother whose presence rub salt in his wound. Teddy falls into a pit of self-pity and angst that he only snaps out of when they use his gloves to save Crimson Fox from becoming a super popsicle. Emily admits that maybe she was doing this to prove her own worth just as much as Teddy’s and they make up. Crimson Fox takes the gloves with her and uses them to foil all the frigid villains and effectively ending cold season early.

SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED | Van (Alan Tudyk) wants to go out of town with his girlfriend but is also stuck with said girlfriend’s daughter, Dylan. To buy her approval, he gets her a miniature toy car but is horrified when he realizes he has to put it together himself. To avoid any kind of personal effort, he enlists Ron (Ron Funches) to assemble it for him. Ron does as he’s told and prepares to go sledding as soon as he’s finished. Just before he can though, he gets a Skype call from Van demanding Ron also build a Wonder Woman Mini Invisible Jet for Dylan. Ron begrudgingly agrees even after Wendy (Jennie Pierson) tells him to stop letting Van walk all over him. He gets the jet done and shipped off to Van but his sledding dreams are crushed once more when Van calls yet again to demand invisible jets for Dylan’s entire “squad’. Ron finally stands up for himself and refuses, even hanging up on Van. Later, he apologizes to Van for his approach but stands by his refusal to be taken advantage of. Van apologizes as well and tells a tale of his dream to build a treehouse with his dad. Ron insists on helping and rushes off to start the blueprints but Van reveals it was all a ploy to build the treehouse for Dylan in the hopes that he and her mother could finally have some alone time together.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
• You can actually taste the bitterness of the person who wrote the Hobbit movie line and they are justified in their salt.
• I get that they are made for children but I need an armada of Wonder Woman Mini Invisible Jets and I need them now.
• “All of reddit said this would work” sums up Zayne and Anton as characters in a single sentence. Keep them away from every female on the planet.
So what did you think? If you could have a Mini version of a hero’s vehicle, what would it be? Would you rock a pair of Teddy’s thermal gloves? Let us know in the comments below!
Powerless airs Thursdays at 8:30pm on NBC.
