“Powerless” Recap: Fish Out Of Gotham

New alliances are formed on this week’s episode of Powerless. When Van costs Wayne Security their biggest client, it is up to him (and by proxy, Emily) to fix it. Meanwhile, Ron is on a mission to prove that one of their coworkers is actually a superhero. Written by Paul Mather and directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, here is what went down in episode three, “Sinking Day”.

UNDER THE SEA | Now that sales are at an all-time high, Van (Alan Tudyk) is convinced he can do no wrong (even more so than usual) and is gunning for a promotion. That comes to a screeching halt when he blows the pitch for Ace Chemicals, their biggest client, after not actually reading the email he got from their chair about what the company actually wanted. They take their company to LexCorp instead and this screw up is big enough for Van Sr. (guest star Corbin Bersen) to come down to the office to chew Van out in person. Determined to win back his father’s respect, Van enlists Emily (Vanessa Hudgens) to help him find a new client. He makes it all of five minutes before giving up but while he is ‘jamming’ forlornly, Emily manages to convince representatives from Atlantis to come here their pitch after they suffered an attack mere days before their annual Sinking Day. They have the chance to supply the security products to all of Atlantis if their pitch isn’t a wash (BOOM double pun).

The reps arrive and Emily gives the pitch and after, they tell her they will think about it. They are almost safely out the door when Van jumps in and tells them how much he loves Sinking Day and he even parties with Aquaman. They are all about meeting Aquaman and ask if they too can come to his Sinking Day party to which Van happily agrees. The only problem is, Sinking Day is tomorrow and Van has never met Aquaman in his life. That won’t hold him (or his expectations of Emily) down so he tasks her with throwing an epic party to wow them with and hopefully distract them from the fact that Aquaman will not be in attendance. He goes as far as to research each of the reps’ interests and catering gifts to them. It actually works perfectly and they are all ready to sign the deal when Van Sr. swoops in and takes the meeting away from Van to prevent him from messing it up. With some encouragement from Emily, Van pulls his father aside and demands to be taken seriously but he didn’t need to because the Atlantians only want to deal with Van and Emily anyhow. The deal is a success and Wayne Security takes on their biggest client yet.

TO SUPER OR NOT TO SUPER | Ron (Ron Funches) is convinced that their coworker, Alex (guest star Matthew Atkinson), is the newest superhero of Charm City named The Olympian. Neither Teddy (Danny Pudi) nor Wendy (Jennie Pierson) are buying his theory and Jackie (Christina Kirk) is more concerned with getting Alex out of his clothes than whether or not those clothes are a superhero costume. Teddy tries to disprove Ron’s theory by dropping a mug right in front of Alex and watching him not catch it but Ron simply points out that catching it would reveal Alex’s true nature to the world. Ron starts tracking Alex’s bathroom habits in order to prove that is where he is changing into his costume, going so far as to place cameras in the bathroom to catch him in the act. He also uses a fake mugging as a ruse to trick Alex into rushing to the rescue and it appears to work, or at least convince Jackie. Teddy is still unconvinced so Wendy decides to end the discussion by casually breaking a chair over Alex’s back and sending him to the ground to prove once and for all he isn’t a superhero.

OTHER THOUGHTS:
• “You are a turd in my toilet and you can’t even swim.” I don’t even full understand that insult but I felt it in my soul.
• Powerless chose a side in the ongoing Jif vs. Gif war and I have to say I feel betrayed.
• When are Van and Emily dropping their new hit single “You Daddy Doesn’t Love You” on iTunes?

So what did you think? Are you convinced Alex isn’t a superhero or is it all part of his plan to stay undercover? If you could party with any superhero, who would it be? Let us know in the comments below!
