“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: Program Terminated

In the curiously titled “Agents of SHIELD” episode, “Hot Potato Soup,” Billy Koenig comes under attack when Radcliffe discovers that he had the Darkhold. Fitz tries to decipher the programming in the LMD Radcliffe, leading to a shocking revelation.

So, May’s a frickin’ robot. Daisy takes the cake for best line of the week as Coulson and company discovered the LMD May swap. May herself did not appear this week, as the show seems to be gearing up towards a mission to save her. Radcliffe is also proving himself to be a truly nasty villain, as demonstrated when he cruelly left LMD May to suffer after her program was complete.

The Koenigs returned, all played by Patton Oswalt, in a move that honestly felt more contrived then it needed to be. Granted, it kept the mystery of who has the Darkhold up in the air for a while, but most of the episode was spent making cracks about the seemingly endless supply of Koenigs. That, and the revelation from one Koenig that fan fiction of Daisy and Black Widow exists. The mind boggles.

We also met the Superior, played by Zack McGowan, who while certainly intimidating, has murky motivations for wanting Inhumans dead. The reveal that he is tracing all catastrophes to Coulson is an intriguing one, but feels a little thin. Hopefully, time will tell.

“Hot Potato Soup” had tons of twists and turns, some of which felt unnecessarily complicated. In a show that is already complicated, that’s not a good thing, but nevertheless, this was a fun episode.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays on ABC.
