“Agents of SHIELD” Episode Review: Trust Issues

This week on “Agents of SHIELD,” the AIDA subplot went on hold as Coulson and company discovered a unsettling secret about Director Mace when an attempt is made on his life.

“The Patriot” was a decidedly old school episode as Coulson, Mack and Mace were marooned in the forest with Watchdogs closing in. This is where it was revealed that Mace was not Inhuman at all, but another product of the super soldier serum that created Captain America. Of course, the Director was hiding something this whole time and this reveal made sense given how Mace acted early on in the season. He was simply there to be the front man.

This plays into the ending of the episode, in which Coulson agrees to keep Mace as the face of SHIELD, while giving Coulson control over their operations. It’s fun to see Coulson having power over Mace and surely he’ll take a bigger leadership role from here on in, which should get us back to the old days of the show.

Not much else happened this week, aside from LMD May realizing that she is not human at all. It’s interesting how LMD May is unaware of her robotic nature and it should give her a greater role to play in the coming episodes.

“The Patriot” was a fun crash back to Earth for the show, returning to elements that made it work back in the day. Even with the crazy characters and story arcs, episodes like these are what makes the show work.

“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC.
