The Magicians Season 2 Review: Has the Syfy Series Lost its Magic Touch?

The first season of Syfy’s The Magicians follows a group of college-aged magicians navigating themselves through their magical education, when their lives are threatened by The Beast.

They devote much of their first year at Brakebills to figuring out a way to travel to the magical world of Fillory to defeat him, when one of their own, Julia, decides her personal revenge is more important than saving her friends and makes a deal with their foe. But what’s going to happen in Season 2?

OMFGTV was lucky enough to screen the first few episodes of the season in advance, and you’ll want to trust us when we say you don’t want to miss this electrifying season!

If you’re a fan of the magical world of Fillory then you will be delighted to know that we will continue to see much more of it and its magic in this second season. With Eliot as the High King, how could we not? But how will he handle being married to a woman and never being able to return home? He handles it in a way that only Eliot could.

And as for Fillory’s magic, well, let’s just say it’s not in as good of shape as Quentin and his friends had hoped. Remember, The Beast has been drinking from the Wellspring every night for years, slowly draining Fillory of its magic.

Speaking of Quentin, this season sees him facing even more personal obstacles than ever, including Alice. Will the two be able to repair their love, or will it be lost forever? You’ll just have to watch to find out.

Quentin also struggles with his friendship with Julia since she betrayed him and all his friends by making a deal with The Beast. He understands why she did it, but will his friends be so understanding? Margo sure has a lot to say on the topic, and she says it in a very Margo way.

The writing of this second season is just as incredible as the first. The writers continue to tell this awe-inspiring story through a combination of dark humor and intelligence that we don’t often see in television. They include socially relevant topics and push the boundaries of right and wrong. And, much like the first season, they are not afraid to include very serious and disturbing topics. Fillory comes to life in this season, and it is all thanks to the wonderful writers.

If you find yourself questioning whether you want to continue with the second season of The Magicians after that shocking season one finale, the answer is yes, you do. You’ll want to see what The Beast and Julia get up to, how Eliot rules his kingdom, and if Penny ever masters the whole “being a traveler” thing. Not to mention all the crazy twists Fillory has in store for them, because come on, it’s Fillory.

Season 2 of The Magicians is more magical than ever and definitely a season you will not want to miss!

Be sure to watch the magic of Fillory come alive when The Magicians season 2 premieres January 25 at 9pm on Syfy.
