“Can a girl just get a cuddle in?!” This was what Anastasia Baranova, who plays Addy Carver in Syfy’s zombie apocalypse series, Z Nation, had to say about Addy’s love life in season 3.
OMFGTV recently had the opportunity to chat with Anastasia about the show, and she teased some pretty big stuff coming up for Addy!
As most fans of Z Nation know, Addy is bisexual– a fact hinted at in episode 11 of season 2, entitled “Corporate Retreat“. In this episode, a woman named Dana (Jana Lee Hamblin) flirts with Addy, who reciprocates. A kiss between the two was filmed, but ultimately cut. Anastasia shared with us that in the original script, Addy and Dana actually had sex in the closet they hid from a zombie in, but that was changed before filming.

Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve definitely seen some sparks flying between Addy and Sun Mei (Sydney Viengluang) this season, so of course, I had to ask Anastasia about that, and about the potential for Addy to have a girlfriend this season. “Y’know, that is an interesting thing that’s sort of started to happen, huh?” she says. “A lil chemistry!”
“Not this year,” Anastasia continues, “This year, she’s all about finding baby Lucy, or grown-up Lucy as she ends up becoming, and sort of dealing with the consequences of Murphy going off the rails, and you know, trying to start a whole Murphy world. Yeah, very little love and affection for Addy this year. And then she gets separated from Warren and the group. But hopefully next year, my god! Can a girl just get a cuddle in?! Yikes! It’s a lonely apocalypse!”
Thus far in season 3, we’ve seen an episode centered on 10K (Nat Zang) and Murphy (Keith Allan) (“Little Red and the WolfZ“) and one that focused on Doc (Russell Hodgkinson) and 10K (“Doc Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest“). Anastasia confirmed that Addy-centric episodes are coming– first while Doc and Addy “go off on adventures,” then in the second-to-last episode of season 3, which will just be focused on Addy.

As far as acting goes, Z Nation is a pretty physically demanding show to work on. Just watching them bashing in zombie heads left and right is enough to make one tired! While the most difficult episode for Anastasia to act this season was “Escorpion and the Red Hand” (“…obviously I didn’t actually have an infected tooth, and so it was a tricky thing to try to figure out how to play…”) the most physically demanding episode was that same second-to-last episode. (Anyone else dying to see that?!)
The nickname for the episode was “Addy’s Revenant episode,” to shed some light on that. “…basically by the end I’ve got two black eyes, a broken nose, a busted collarbone—she’s just honestly on her last thread, so by the end of the season, I was covered in bruises, you know, really banged up, because that kind of action stuff—you can only fake so much. If you’re taking a hit, you’re taking a hit; if you’ve gotta fall, at some point you’ve gotta fall.”
The Man (Joseph Gatt) has seemed to be the main antagonist of season 3, though we’ve seen very little of him until recently. He finally caught up with Murphy in Welcome to Murphytown, and, well, it was grisly.
Will we ever see Addy interact with The Man? “Yes!” Anastasia told us. “He’s The Man, and he has the list, and very soon we’ll figure out who else is on his list, and basically, The Man becomes Addy’s arch-nemesis, and that penultimate episode is just sort of the two of them going at it. It’s pretty dramatic.”
