Why We’re Excited for Marvel’s “Runaways”

Marvel Studios has delivered incredible films, larger than life characters and some of the best streaming shows around. Any new project they announce is going to attract legions of fans, comic book readers or otherwise. But the one that’s grabbing our attention the most is Runaways, Hulu’s upcoming series based on Brian K. Vaughan’s 2003 comic book series. Here’s every reason we can’t wait to binge this sure-to-be epic show.

The Creators Know What They’re Doing | Marvel’s casting is always spot on, but few realize how important the writers and directors are. In the case of Runaways Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage- creators of teen dramas such as “The O.C.” and “Gossip Girl”- are helming this show about six teenagers whose parents are planning the apocalypse. Clearly, the pair are perfect for the job. They could tell an authentic  teenage drama in their sleep.

The Comic Is Amazing | Great source material is key to a great adaptation. Runaways was a hit back in 2003 and is still a fan-favorite today for good reasons. The concept is unique, the writing is funny and the art is jaw-dropping. Even if the show doesn’t follow the comic’s storyline to the letter, the fact that the comic is getting adapted at all is cause for celebration.

The Characters Are Diverse | In our diversity-obsessed age, Runaways may just be what society needs. One character is African-American, another is Asian-American, one’s overweight, another is an adorable twelve year old, there’s a handsome jock and finally, a lesbian. Not only that, but each character is memorable and entertaining. Seeing them finally come to life will be a treat.

It’s Not a Movie | Rarely do comic book fans say that they don’t want a comic book to be a movie, but in this case, the fact that Runaways is heading to Hulu as opposed to the big screen is a benefit. Rather than a two hour timeframe to tell a complex story with six amazing characters, viewers have 13+ hours to get to know the story and characters. Sometimes, more is more.

Marvel Will Treat It Right | Ever since Robert Downey Jr. was announced as Iron Man, Marvel has been churning out fantastic comic book properties for years because they respect the material and cast the perfect actors to bring it to life. Runaways should be no exception and with Marvel on board, the series is in the best hands possible.

Runaways will be heading to Hulu soon.
