On the Supergirl episode “Solitude,” Kara parts from the DEO just when a computer controlling alien named Indigo attacks National City. James’s relationship with Lucy comes to a head and Winn works with Henshaw and Alex to help Supergirl.
This episode managed to advance the storylines from last week while also going back to the villain of the week format, which is fairly admirable. Indigo was a unique villain with cool powers and a strong connection to Kara’s past, even if it wasn’t fully explored by episode’s end. However, Non’s recovery of Indigo’s chopped up remains hints that we haven’t seen the last of her.
The episode also managed to tie up two storylines in two consecutive scenes: Lucy finally dumps James after realizing just how much he loves Kara and Alex confesses to her role in Astra’s death. Both of these scenes were well done; Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s performance was subtly heartbroken, while Chyler Leigh’s was more obviously heartbroken. The final image of Kara, Alex and Henshaw together was one of the more touching scenes the show has put out.
Once again, the show is trying to push that Siobhan is important with revelations about her past, but once again, she comes off as one-dimensional. She does kiss Winn at the end, so maybe she’ll grow into a larger character, but until then, she’s a dud.
“Solitude” was a hybrid of the two things the show does best- standalone adventures and earth-shattering revelations- and it miraculously worked. Once again packing in both action and emotion, it was a fun little episode.
