10 Times Jane the Virgin Made Us Get All Misty-Eyed

Since its premiere in October of 2014, the CW’s Jane the Virgin has captured thousands of hearts. Despite a premise (virgin gets accidentally artificially inseminated; telenovela-scale drama erupts) that could have made this show either completely comedic or cringey and uncomfortable, Jane the Virgin instead balances the humor with just the right amount of heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. Gina Rodriguez skillfully tugs heartstrings as the big-dreaming, fiercely loyal, wise-beyond-her-years Jane Gloriana Villanueva, and the rest of the cast is equally moving.

If you haven’t finished season 2 (hi, Mom), you might not want to read this yet. And what are you waiting for? Seasons 1 and 2 are on Netflix! Go! I’ll be here when you get back!

So, without further ado, here are 10 moments from seasons 1 and 2 of Jane the Virgin that are almost guaranteed to make you cry.

1) When Jane and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) heard Mateo’s heartbeat at their first sonogram. (Chapter Two)

2) When Jane realized that she could feel Mateo kicking. (Chapter Eleven)

3) When Jane called Rogelio (Jaime Camil) “Dad” for the first time. (Chapter Twelve)

4) When Rafael, Xo (Andrea Navedo), Alba (Ivonne Coll), and Rogelio held a graduation ceremony around Jane’s bed when she was on bedrest. (Chapter Thirteen)

5) When Xo coached Jane as she gave birth to Mateo, just as Alba coached Xo as she gave birth to Jane. (Chapter Twenty-Two)

6) When we saw all 3 generations of Villanueva women give the same christening blessing throughout the years—this one deserves a transcript. (Chapter Twenty-Five)

“My precious child, these are the things I hope for you and your life. May you be bold. May you be brave. May you be loving, and joyful, and kind. May you carry with you the vitality and spirit of the generations before you. Whatever you dream for your life, may you summon the strength to follow that dream. May you always let your faith be greater than your fear. May you never forget, through all of life’s adventures, through every moment of every day, that I walk beside you, cheering you on. Hoping for you, praying for you, loving you. And may you one day love your own child as deeply as I love you.”

7) When Jane coached Petra (Yael Grobglas) through giving birth to Elsa and Anna (no, not like in Frozen). (Chapter Thirty-Six)

8) When Michael (Brett Dier) proposed to Jane for the second time—Jane fell to her knees with him and said “yes” about forty times before Michael could even finish proposing. (Chapter Thirty-Six)

9) When Rogelio made the sweetest video for Jane’s first Mother’s Day. (Chapter Forty-Two)

10) When Michael said his wedding vows to Jane in Spanish. (Chapter Forty-Four)

Hoo boy, pass the tissues!

Jane the Virgin returns on October 17th with all-new twists, turns, and tearjerkers! And based on the way we left things in the season 2 finale, I’d recommend stocking up on tissues!
